What’s In

In Lesson 5, you learned how to identify sources of research problems

and applied the guidelines or criteria in the selection of a research
problem. A research topic must be very clear and easy to understand. It
should give information to the people and it should be comprehensive.
These previous topics were all important for you to explore and discover
new skills in conducting a research.

What’s New

Activity 1. What’s with the COVID-19 Vaccine?

Objective:

After doing the activity you should be able to identify the importance
of conceptualizing and identifying original topics in research

Procedure:

Cite at least five things that you want to know about the COVID-19
vaccine. Write your answers on the space provided.

What is It

Research is encountered by all of us in our daily lives. Results of

research on many topics are presented to us in the form of articles, book,
reports, social media, newspaper, television programs, print media and any other
types of sources that could give us different information. For example, the
existence of the COVID 19-vaccine in this pandemic was a result of a research
finding experimented by the scientists and were presented to us by television
news reports, radio, newspaper and any other types of media.

Ideas for research topics can be a result from a range of sources such
as personal or professional experience, a theory, the media, or other research
studies. As young researchers, you also have your own capability to come up
with your own research findings. Before conducting a research, it is important to
have your own and original research topic.

An original research is considered a primary source. It is the report of

a study written by the researchers who actually did the study. Originality is one
of the most important criteria for a successful research. A research is original if
it is actually done by a person who published and reported it. It is original if it is
not plagiarized. It is original if it is based on the data that were gathered
appropriately and correctly. Here are the important key points on the importance
of conceptualizing and formulating original research topics.

5
A research topic is considered original if:

✓ it is the report of a research study published and written by the

researchers who actually worked for it
✓ the researchers used a valid and reliable statistical tools and
interpreted the results logically
✓ the researchers had written a detailed research methods
✓ the study is not plagiarized
✓ references or resources cited are true
✓ the results of the study are published and reported scientifically

Having original research topics can help you to:

1. Generate new ideas – it helps you to become more creative and

motivated. It’s a good feeling to come up with a new and unique idea in
the field of research
2. Apply new methods to existing research studies – your study might
be the one that can unlock the unanswered question of a particular
research study
3. Synthesize new interpretations of an existing information –
research is a collaboration of not just two minds, but it can be a
collaboration of many researchers and scientists. Having new research
topics might help other experts to interpret their existing information
of a particular study
4. Critique or disprove existing theories, models or study – research
is dynamic, there will be instances wherein a study or data will be
changed, disproved, or critiqued for a reason. Your research topic may
also provide new solutions to a specific problem.
5. Analyze and interpret data in new ways – new study means new
methods to analyze and interpret data. It can lead to new discoveries
as well and result to a successful research study.
6. Discover the gaps or limitations of an existing study – having
studied different types of resources or literature can help other
researchers to discover the gaps and limitations in their study through
a new topic in the research field. New research studies can also
confirm theories.

6
What’s More

Conceptualizing research topic is a very helpful way to come up with

new information and data. It also helps us discover new things and learn
different investigative methods.

Activity 2. The R&D Blueprint

Objective:

After doing the activity you should be able to point out the things you need
to do to have an original research topic.

Procedure:

Read and understand this part of an article about COVID 19-vaccine.

Answer the guide questions.

WHO is bringing the world’s scientists and global health professionals together
to accelerate the research and development process and develop new norms and
standards to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and help care for those
affected.

The R&D Blueprint has been activated to accelerate diagnostics, vaccines and
therapeutics for this novel coronavirus.

The solidarity of all countries will be essential to ensure equitable access to

COVID-19 health products.

WHO is gathering the latest international multilingual scientific findings and

knowledge on COVID-19. The global literature cited in the WHO COVID-19 database
is updated daily (Monday through Friday) from searches of bibliographic databases,
hand searching, and the addition of other expert-referred scientific articles. This
database represents a comprehensive multilingual source of current literature on the
topic. While it may not be exhaustive, new research is added regularly.

The WHO evidence retrieval sub-group has begun collaboration with key
partners to enrich the citations and build a more comprehensive database with
inclusion of other content. The database is built by BIREME, the Specialized Center of
PAHO/AMRO and part of the Regional Office’s Department of Evidence and
Intelligence for Action in Health.

learned in this lesson. Write at least two sentences in each box.

For today’s lesson, I learned that

What I Can Do

Conceptualizing research topics require a lot of things and skills. Here

are some of the general tips on generating a research topic:

• Search for ideas on the internet, theories, media or even from your personal
experiences. Make a deep research about the study that you have chosen.
Search for related literatures.
• Reflect on a topic you heard about on television or media that is related with
your interest.
• Think about issues the society deals with. Maybe there are things that you
want to solve or problems that want to investigate.
• Take time to flip a science or math book, magazines or encyclopedias for
inspiration
• Think about the research and laboratory skills that you have learned and
think for a situation where you can use those skills.

From your answers in Activity 1, formulate a research topic in each of

your answer.
