HCT 1101 Introduction to Computer Systems

Course Level: Year 1 Semester 1


Course Credit: Brief Course

Description

This course unit will provide an introduction to computer systems, covering the basic
components of a computer, their functions, and different types of computer systems.
Additionally, students will learn how ICT impacts everyday life, including trends in
computer use and social media platforms.

Course Objectives

The course intends should be able to:


1. Identify and describe the basic components of a computer system
2. Examine the basic components of a computer system work together
3. Identify the different types of computer systems and their uses
4. Explain the impact of ICT on everyday life and identify trends in computer use
5. Examine the importance of computer maintenance and security and basic
techniques for maintaining and securing a computer.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the learners should be able to:


1. Understand how the basic components of a computer system work
together
2. Apply the different types of computer systems and their uses
3. Appreciate the impact of ICT on everyday life and identify trends in
computer use
4. Demonstrate basic file management and computer troubleshooting
5. Apply basic techniques to maintain and secure a computer.

Information and Communications Technology in everyday life


Desktop computers, Smartphone, Tablets and other gadgets.
Domotics linking our homes, work place, entertainment, and daily communications
Social media Facebook, Twitter, Google, tik tok Miniaturization,
wearable, voice and motion-controlled devices

Basic Computer Skills


Understanding the keyboard, mouse, and touchpad
Basic Computer Operations:
Powering on and off a computer
Navigating the desktop environment
Basic typing and mouse skills
Using peripheral devices
Introduction to file management and organization
Creating and managing folders and files
Basic troubleshooting techniques

Basic Software Skills


Introduction to word processing software
Creating and editing simple documents using word processing software
Internet and Email
Understanding the internet and web browsers
Browsing the web and navigating websites

Searching for information online

Basic email skills, including composing and sending emails, and managing email
messages

Computer Maintenance and Security


Understanding the importance of computer maintenance and security
