2. COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES


This course aims at providing an introduction to the science and discipline of computing with emphasis
on its applications in businesses. The major parts of the course will cover the basic concepts of computers
– both hardware and software as well as the Internet/Networks and their applications, Computer Security
& Privacy, Information & Data Management and brief introduction to Information Systems and System
Development. The emphasis is on students gaining an understanding and achieving proficiency in the use
of essential tools for productivity with computing technology.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, the students should understand the rudiments of
computers and how it underpins organisational development. Students should be able to identify the
information system cycle and also know information process cycle. They should understand the internet
and how it can be leveraged for efficiency in business organisation. Students should be able to know and
describe prominent business application software’s.

Delivery mode: The course will be delivered through a blended mode (Face to face and online). Students
are expected to read topics in textbook. Any changes to the schedule and assignments will be given in
class.

Plagiarism Policy: Plagiarism in any form is unacceptable in the University of Ghana and shall be treated
as a serious offence. Appropriate sanctions, as stipulated in the Plagiarism Policy, will be applied when
students are found to have violated the Plagiarism policy.
