Motivation
Turbulent flows are everywhere in nature and engineering

Motivation
qHorace Lamb
”I am an old man now, and when I die and go to heaven
there are two matters on which I hope for enlightenment.
One is quantum electrodynamics, and the other is the
turbulent motion of fluids. And about the former I am rather
optimistic.”
qWerner Heisenberg
“When I meet God, I am going to ask him two questions:
Why relativity? And why turbulence? I really believe he
will have an answer for the first.“
qRichard Feynman
Has described turbulence as the most important unsolved
problem of classical physics 2

Mass Conservation The mass flow terms occur on all six faces, three inlets and three outlets. We make use
of the field or continuum concept from Chap. 1, where all fluid properties are considered
to be uniformly varying functions of time and position, such as ρ 5 ρ(x, y, z, t). Thus,
if T is the temperature on the left face of the element in Fig. 4.1, the right face will
𝑑𝑚#$# 𝜕𝜌 have a slightly different temperature T 1 ( 0T/0x) dx. For mass conservation, if ρu is
=0=( 𝑑𝒱 + ( 𝜌 𝑉 0 𝑛 𝑑𝐴 known on the left face, the value of this product on the right face is ρu 1 ( 0ρu/0x) dx.
