INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS A BARRIER-FREE ENVIRONMENT?


A BARRIER-FREE ENVIRONMENT IS A SPACE THAT ALLOWS FOR FREE AND SAFE MOVEMENT,
FUNCTION AND ACCESS FOR ALL, REGARDLESS OF AGE, SEX OR CONDITION. A SPACE OR A
SET OF SERVICES THAT CAN BE ACCESSED BY ALL, WITHOUT OBSTACLES, WITH DIGNITY AND
WITH AS MUCH INDEPENDENCE AS POSSIBLE. THE ENVIRONMENT MEANS BUILDINGS,
ROADS, PARKS, GARDENS AND OTHER PLACES, SERVICES, MODES OF TRANSPORTATION,
PRODUCTS OF DAILY USE, ETC. THERE IS A POPULAR BELIEF THAT A RAMP AND AN
ELEVATOR/ LIFT IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED TO MAKE A BUILT SPACE BARRIER-FREE.
IT MUST BE CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD THAT BARRIER-TREE GOES FAR BEYOND JUST A RAMP
AND HAS MANY OTHER NECESSARY ASPECTS. THESE RANGE FROM DOOR AND PASSAGE
WIDTHS TO FLOORING SURFACES, FROM COUNTER HEIGHTS TO DOOR HANDLES AND "DISABLED VETERANS"
RAILINGS, FROM SIGNAGE AND AUDITORY SIGNALS TO TACTILE GUIDES RON MACE WAS AN INFLUENTIAL ARCHITECT AND A PIONEER
IN THE FIELD OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN.

BOOK, "DESIGNING FOR THE DISABLED," PUBLISHED IN 1963, WHICH
HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING ENVIRONMENTS THAT
ACCOMMODATE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, SELWYN GOLDSMITH CONTRIBUTED TO
THE 20TH CENTURY BROUGHT ABOUT MAJOR SOCIAL CHANGES WITH RESPECT TO CIVIL AND THE IDEA OF DROPPED KERBS. AFTER CONSULTING WITH OTHER
HUMAN RIGHTS. MEDICAL ADVANCES DURING THIS PERIOD MEANT THAT THE LIKELIHOOD OF WHEELCHAIR USERS, THEY WERE DEVELOPED IN THE EARLY 1960S.
