Lab Experiment Manual: Modeling and

Analysis of Transmission Lines in Power

Systems
1. Introduction
In this lab, you will use PowerWorld Simulator to model and analyze transmission lines. The
experiment will guide you through setting up a system in PowerWorld Simulator, analyzing
transmission line performance (short, medium, and long lines), and calculating important
parameters like voltage regulation and line losses.

2. Objectives
By the end of this lab, you will be able to:
- Set up PowerWorld Simulator for transmission line modeling.
- Analyze transmission line performance using different models (short, medium, and long).
- Calculate voltage regulation, line losses, and transmission efficiency.
- Visualize power flow and voltage levels across the system.
- Understand the effect of line length on voltage regulation and power losses.

3. Lab Procedure

Step 1: Introduction to PowerWorld Simulator

1.1 Open PowerWorld Simulator and create a new case:
- Navigate to the 'File' menu and select 'New Case' to start a fresh project.- The Single-Line
Diagram window will open; this is where you will create the transmission system.

1.2 Add key components to the system:

- Add two buses (one for the sending end and one for the receiving end). Click on the
'Network' button and select 'Insert Bus'.- Name the first bus 'Sending Bus' and the second
one 'Receiving Bus'.- Insert a generator at the sending end bus and a load at the receiving
end bus by selecting 'Insert Generator' and 'Insert Load'.- Draw a transmission line between
the two buses. Click on the 'Line' button and draw the line between the sending and
receiving buses.
(Refer to this [link to image of PowerWorld Single-Line Diagram setup](https://example-
link.com) for help).

1.3 Input transmission line data:

- Double-click on the transmission line to open the properties window. Enter the resistance
(R), reactance (X), and line length as given in the lab manual.- For short transmission lines,
set the capacitance (C) to zero.

Step 2: Simulating Short Transmission Line

2.1 Enter the following parameters for a short transmission line (neglecting capacitance):
- Resistance (R): 0.1 Ohms/km
- Reactance (X): 0.2 Ohms/km
- Line Length: 50 km

Ensure that the capacitance value is set to zero.

2.2 Run the simulation:

- Click on the 'Power Flow' button and select 'Run Power Flow'.
- Observe the sending-end and receiving-end voltage, current, and power.
Fill out the following table with your results:

Parameter Sending End Receiving End Comments

Voltage (V)

Current (A)

Power (MW)

2.3 Calculate the Voltage Regulation and Efficiency:

- Voltage Regulation (%) = [(Vs - Vr) / Vr] * 100
- Efficiency (%) = (Power Received / Power Sent) * 100
- Fill in the calculation results below:

Parameter Formula Result (%)

Voltage Regulation [(Vs - Vr) / Vr] * 100

Efficiency (Power Received / Power

Sent) * 100

Step 3: Simulating Medium Transmission Line

3.1 Now model a medium transmission line:
- Use the same R and X values, but set the Capacitance (C) to 0.0002 μF/km.
- Set the line length to 150 km.

3.2 Run the simulation:

- Run the power flow simulation again and observe the updated voltage and power results.
Fill in the table below:

Parameter Sending End Receiving End Comments

Voltage (V)

Current (A)

Power (MW)

3.3 Repeat the calculation for Voltage Regulation and Efficiency using the updated data.

Step 4: Simulating Long Transmission Line

4.1 Now simulate a long transmission line:
- Set the line length to 300 km and use the following parameters:
- Resistance (R): 0.1 Ohms/km
- Reactance (X): 0.2 Ohms/km
- Capacitance (C): 0.0003 μF/km.

4.2 Run the power flow simulation for the long transmission line and fill in the results
below:

Parameter Sending End Receiving End Comments

Voltage (V)

Current (A)

Power (MW)

5. Post-Lab Analysis
1. Calculate the ABCD parameters for each transmission line using PowerWorld Simulator.
Use the following equations:
- A = D = cosh(γl), B = Zc sinh(γl), C = (1/Zc) sinh(γl), where γ is the propagation constant
and Zc is the characteristic impedance.
2. Compare the results of voltage regulation, efficiency, and losses between short, medium,
and long transmission lines.
6. Conclusion
Summarize the key findings of the lab. Discuss the impact of line length on voltage
regulation, efficiency, and power losses, and describe how modeling transmission lines can
aid in real-world power system design and analysis.
