CHAPTER ONE

Driving Rules and Regulations

Road side signs
International signs convey their massages with symbols rather
than words.
Drivers who travel from country to country can read these
signs with out learning different languages.
Driver become aware of the traffic control differences as
color, language of message, symbols and applications to
avoid misreading them when driving
Driving would be impossible with out signs ,signals ,and road
way markings . These controls help traffic to flow smoothly.
Traffic signs have many purposes , each traffic sign has a
specific color and shape .
Traffic signs and roadway markings are
divided into three broad categories:
Regulatory (controlling signs)
Warning
Informative
1. Regulatory signs
Most regulatory signs are circular. A RED RING or RED
CIRCLE indicates a prohibition.

A BLUE CIRCLE generally gives a positive (mandatory)


instruction or indicates a route for use only by
particular classes of vehicle.

Warning sign alerts you to possible hazards, and road


conditions.
 Warning signs helps you to avoid surprise situations such
as these warn you of a danger ahead.
Be prepared to slow or stop when you see warning sing.
Most warning signs are triangular
In some countries the sign are diamond shaped with
black symbols and yellow back ground .
3. Informative signs (Guide signs )
Guide sign provides information.
 these signs provide information such as marking
routes, intersections, service areas, and other points of
interest or information .
Traffic lights
Traffic lights are, driver traffic signals and Pedestrian signals.

 They are used to help traffic flow smoothly each of these


devices is a traffic signal . All traffic signals have specific
colors. Each color has specific meaning.

Red means “STOP” you must stop behind the stop line.

Yellow means “CAUTION”, you must be ready to stop.


Green means go; you can proceed if the way is
clear and safe.

Red light:-you must come to a “full


stop” at a read light. Stop behind the
Stop lines, crosswalk, or before
entering the intersection.

Red and yellow:-when this tow signal


light together is ready to go.
Road lines and markings

Road markings are a traffic sign in the form and


design of a marking on the surface of the road.

 They have the same status as upright signs.

Road users must obey these road markings.


The most common types of road marking and what heir meaning.

Single or double continuous white lines along the centre of the


road

All traffic must keep to the left of the line (except in an emergency)
Longer white lines /warning lines along the centre of the road
These warning lines alert drivers to hazards such as
restricted vision, approach to a junction, approach to a
roundabout, a hill, crests, bends and continuous white line
ahead.
Short broken white lines along the
centre of the road
These divide two lanes of traffic
travelling in opposite directions.
You must not cross them unless it is
safe to do so.

Double broken white lines along the


centre of the road
These alert drivers to continuous
white lines a short distance
ahead.
As a driver, you must not cross
them unless it is safe to do so.
A broken white line with a single
white line along the centre of the
road

The driver must obey the line that is


nearest to them. In this picture, the
driver in the car must remain to the
left of the continuous white line.

A broken white Yield line crossing the left hand lane.


A white triangular Yield symbol may also be provided
with the Yield line.

The driver must give right of way to any


traffic on a major road ahead.
The yield line usually appears with an
upright Yield sign.
Pedestrian Crossing
 They are also called zebra crossings and indicate the possible
movement of pedestrians across the road.
 The actual crossing area is marked by black and white
‘zebra’ stripes.
 Drivers must stop to let you cross. As they approach the
crossing, they should slow down and be prepared to stop.
 They must stop behind the stop line if there is one and must
not enter any part of the crossing.
Parking

Text and Arrows


Words painted on the road surface, usually have an
obvious meaning. Arrows are painted to indicate the
lanes to be taken for a particular direction.
