TYPES OF ACADEMIC TEXT

1. DESCRIPTIVE – it is the simplest type

of academic writing. Its purpose is to
provide facts or information.
2. ANALYTICAL – shows the thought
processes you went through to arrive at
a given conclusion and discusses the
implications of this. It usually follows a
brief description and focuses on
answering questions like: “why?”,
“how?” and “so what?”.
3. PERSUASIVE – also known as the
argument essay, uses logic and reason to
show that one idea is more legitimate
 than another. It attempts to persuade a
reader to adopt a certain point of view or
to take a particular action.
4. CRITICAL – it gives someone’s own
perspective based on their analysis of
the existing research, which in this case
includes the suggestion that further
research is required because the existing
