the book/news is about.
We are very visual creatures. A large percentage of the human brain dedicates itself to
visual processing. Our love for images lies with our cognition and ability to pay attention.
Images are able to grab our attention easily, we are immediately drawn to them.

What’s In
3
What is It
We get influenced by the things we watched through different media. The following
are images/ideas explicitly used to influence our way of thinking. Take time to
read, analyze and recognize each.
Examples:
• Bandwagon- This gives us the idea that one could be an outcast
if he or she does not use a product, which everybody else is using.
• Buzz- This uses word-spread-by-mouth strategy. The idea is to
let a product, a service, or an idea remain the talk of the town,
which makes everybody wants to know it.
• Fear- This strategy warns its viewers or listeners of the serious
problem that may arise if one will use a certain product, avail of
a certain service, or embrace an idea.
• Repetition- We get to remember ideas when these are repeated to
us. This works as well with advertisements and marketing
strategies. It could be reflected in their jingles or narration, or
simply running the short ad twice.
• Testimonial- People just love famous personalities and
celebrities. This strategy takes advantage of this. A famous
personality recommends, supports, endorses, or approves a
product, service, program, or an idea, which is believed to be
followed by his or her fans, or followers.
• Name-calling- this technique consists in giving a bad name to a
person, a group, an idea or an event. The name so given arouses
an emotional attitude of hostility and rejection
• Card-stacking- This device requires skill and ingenuity. The facts
are twisted and colored by the propagandist to suit his interest
and impress his listeners. Thus, a politician may weave a story
and present it as a true event.
• Plain folks- is a propaganda technique in which someone tries to
present himself or herself as an "Average Joe." It is used to gain
the interest of the everyday man.
• Transfer- In this device, the propagandist presents his cause as
an integral part of a larger cause by identifying himself and his
cause with the collective representation acceptable to the public
at large.
• Glittering generalities- is an emotionally appealing phrase so
closely associated with highly valued concepts and beliefs that it
carries conviction without supporting information or reason.
Such highly valued concepts attract general approval and
acclaim.
4
2. STEREOTYPES- are results of incomplete or distorted information
accepted as fact without question. A stereotype is simply a widely held
belief that an individual is a member of a certain group based on
characteristics.
Examples:
• Fathers are idolized by their sons; mothers are idolized by their
daughters
• People who join rallies or other forms of protest are idle and
jobless
• Only ladies can wear pink; only men can wear blue
• Members of fraternities are tough, ruthless, and feared by those
who are not.
Examples:
• First Person: I love Jollibee chicken joy. It’s so crispy and tasty.
• Second Person: Sometimes, you cannot discern between anger
and frustration.
• Third Person: Mr. Castillo is a principled man. He acts by the
book and never lets you deceive him.
