~Starting rapid Typing~

Introduction
To gain mastery on computer keyboard,
undertake repeated practice of typing
words, sentences, paragraphs. There are
many typing practice software available
which can be downloaded free from
internet. These software help to learn
typing efficiently and effectively.

Rapid Typing
Rapid typing is one of the convenient and
easy to use touch typing trainer that
helps to increase the typing speed and to
reduce the typing errors. It provides
various typing lessons which focus on the
different keyboard groups. These lessons
help to learn touch typing in a short time.
Now, let us start with Rapid Typing
lessons to learn and practice touch
typing.
Starting Rapid Typing
Rapid typing is a freeware software that
can be downloaded free of cost from the
Internet and easily installed in the
system. Once the Rapid typing is
installed, to open it;
Double-click the Rapid typing shortcut
icon on Desktop.

Or
Step 1: Click on Start button.
Step 2: Click on All programs.
Step 3: Click on Rapid typing 5
option.
Step 4: Click on Rapidtyping5 in the
sub menu to open the Software in a
new window.

Look at the first screen which appears,


when the Rapid typing 5.0 is loaded.
The main window is composed of the
following components:
Tab buttons: The three tab buttons on
the top left corner are used to switch
between the basics program modes,
These are,
 Current Lesson (Ctrl+1): It allow to
choose the course and the lesson.
 Student Statistics (Ctrl+2): It shows
the users performance for a
particular session, lesson, day or
course in graphical manner.
 Lesson Editor (Ctrl+3): It allows to
customize the existing lessons or
to make the new lessons.
Toolbar: It appears just below the tabs
area which allows to choose some basic
options under the various tabs like course
and lesson, adding groups and students,
creating course and lesson, etc.
Text Panel: Below the toolbar is text
panel, which shows the text next or
characters to be typed.
Status Bar: Just below the Text panel
there is a status bar which suggests
which finger you should use to type the
current character. It also shows two
progress bar i.e. yellow to show the
lesson progress and green to show the
acceptable time for typing the current
character.
Options: The button can be accessed
from the top right corner of the Rapid
Typing window which gives option to
change keyboard settings, backgrounds
and text color, font, sound, etc.
Virtual Keyboard: It is available under the
status bar which helps to learn touch
typing with ten fingers. It shows the
layout of your keyboard and you can
modify its appearance as needed.

Working with Rapid Typing


Lessons
To start with the first lesson
Step 1: Click the Current lesson tab.
Step 2: In the toolbar, click Select
Course drop button to choose course
level. The available options are:

Introduction: This level is useful for


those who are using the keyboard for
the first time. It covers all the
characters typed on the keyboard.
Beginner: This level helps to learn the
key positions on the keyboard and to
know which key is to be tested with
which finger. It also covers the
uppercase letters, special symbols and
numeric keypad.
Experienced: The experience course
helps to improve your typing speed by
memorizing frequently used words.
Advanced: The advanced course helps
you to perfect the skills acquired by
typing an actual text.
Testing: The testing course tests your
touch typing skills.

So let us start with the
Introduction level
 Step 1: Click Select Lesson button
which contains the various lesson
categories. Select Basics category
from the list and choose Lesson 1
from the sub menu. The lesson time
for the current lesson will appear in
the toolbar.
The text panel area is now
showing the characters that are
to be typed.

Step 2: Put your fingers in the base


position as displayed in the virtual
keyboard. To start, press the first letter
key which is enclosed within a
rectangular box in the text panel.
Step 3: When you press the correct
key, the selected letter in the text panel
turns green and the rectangular box
moves to the next character. In case of
a wrong key press, the letter turns red,
prompting you to press the correct key.

Step 4: If the right key is not pressed


within the allotted time for the current
letter, the color changes to yellow.
Splitting the Lesson
The lesson opened in the Editing panel
can also be splitted in two or more
smaller lessons using Split lesson tool
on the toolbar.
Step 1: Open the lesson in the
Editing panel.
Split Lesson

Step 2: Click Split lesson button on


the toolbar. A Split lesson dialog box
appears. The lesson can be splitted
by characters, words, sentences or
paragraphs.
Step 3: Choose the option by which
the lesson is to be splitted and enter
the required number for each lesson.
Step 4: Click OK button. The lesson
will get splitted in multiple lessons
which get listed in the Navigation
pane.
Step 5: Change the name of the
splitted lesson if needed by using the
title option under Lesson properties.
