Typing Tutor – Highly Recommended

One of the most common requirements of computer-literacy identified by lecturers across the university
and employers of graduates from NMMU, is the ability to type. Using two fingers is not very effective
when you actually have 8 fingers and 2 thumbs, so why not learn to use them!! If you already know
how use them, use this opportunity to increase your typing speed.
The typing tutor software used in the CS laboratories may also be downloaded free from the Internet
(http://www.tipp10.com/en/download/), so if you have your own computer, it is highly recommended
that you install the software and practice every chance you get – the ability to type fast, without looking
at the keyboard, is a very useful life skill.
1. Getting Started
• Double-click on the icon on your desktop.
• NB: Use the Scroll Bar to READ the Introduction screen that will be displayed.
Read the 6 tips displayed on the screen, and note the placement of your fingers on the
keyboard.

• Click on the Launch button to continue BUT only after you have scrolled down and read
all the content at least once.

• The main screen appears. On this screen you will choose the training lesson, duration and
assistance required. You can maximise the window.

• Click on the down-arrow under Time Limit to decrease the duration of a lesson to 2 minutes.
All the other options can be left as they are. Lesson 1 should be selected, so you click on
Start Training.

If you are doing your practicals from home, you will have to set the location for the tracking file to a
location that is easy to access before you start with the first training lesson, so that you can copy
this tracking file to your submission folder to be marked. To do this, go to File \ General Settings and
click on Results. Under Data Location, click on the Browse button ( ) and browse to the location
where you want to save the file and click on OK. Then click on Save.

2. Training Lesson 1
• Put your fingers on the home row (as indicated), and press the spacebar to start.
• Text will appear above the image of the keyboard – you need to type it exactly as it is – the
rectangle indicates where you are in the text. If you make a mistake it will not continue, but
wait for you to type the correct character. The relevant key will be highlighted on the image
of the keyboard. Below the image of the keyboard you will see an indication of which finger
should be used to type the specific key.
• When the 2 minute period is over, a report will be shown on the screen.

3. Saving your results

• In the Dept CS labs, your results are automatically saved to the root of your S drive, in a file
called Tipp10v2.db. Never move or delete the file, as all records of your progress will then
be gone. If you are doing your practicals at home, it is your responsibility to make sure that
you copy the tracking file from your home computer to your S drive.
4. Learning through On-line Lessons
• You can repeat the lessons to better your typing skills. Select the relevant lesson from the
main screen.
• Click on the Start Training button.
• Select the next lesson from the list. Check the Weekly Guide for which lessons should be
completed each week.

5. Practicing the Skills you have Learned
• Click on the Open Lessons tab on the main screen.

• A number of different exercises are available – these exercises cover all the keyboard keys
and should be done when you feel more confident about your keyboard skills.
6. Checking your Progress
• Section the Results option on the Go menu.

• All the lessons you have completed will be listed.

Note: Your results file will be automatically checked on a random basis, along with the practical
files you save each week. DO NOT move this file from the root of your SUBMISSIONS folder!
7. Exiting the program
• When you have completed the tasks in the typing tutor, you can close the program by
clicking on File and then Exit, or by using the close button .
