What mass of sulfur dioxide would be produced if 64 tonnes

of sulfur was completely reacted with

oxygen gas?

Balanced chemical equation:

S+O2→SO2
 Calculate the molar mass of and sulfur dioxide (SO₂)
 Determine the number of moles of sulfur in 64 tonnes:
Since 1 tonne = 1,000,000 grams, 64 tonnes = 64,000,000
grams.
1 mole of sulfur (S) produces 1 mole
of sulfur dioxide (SO₂).

 1,995,632 moles of S will produce 1,995,632 moles of

SO₂.

 Calculate the mass of sulfur dioxide (SO₂):

 Answer
127,864,485g=127.86tonnes

 Find the mass of water formed when 18.05g of oxygen reacts with
excess of hydrogen.
 How many grams of sodium chloride would be formed if 20 g of
sodium reacted with an excess of chlorine gas?
 What mass of iron(III) oxide would be produced when 12 g of iron reacts
completely with oxygen?
 How many grams of magnesium oxide would be formed if 25 g of
magnesium reacts with excess oxygen gas?
 Molecular Mass
 Definition: The molecular mass is the sum of the atomic
masses of all the atoms in a molecule.

 Formula:
Molecular mass=atomic masses of all atoms in a molecul
e

 Example: For water (H₂O), the molecular mass is

calculated as:
Molecular mass of H₂O=(2×1.01 g/mol)+(1×16.00 g/mol)=1
8.02 g
 Formula Mass
 Definition: Formula mass is the sum of the atomic masses of the
atoms in the empirical formula of a compound, often used for ionic
compounds.

 Formula:
Formula mass=atomic masses of ions in the empirical formula

 Example: For sodium chloride (NaCl), the formula mass is:

Formula mass of NaCl=(1×22.99 g/mol)+(1×35.45 g/mol)=58.44 g/mo
l
 Definition: A mole is a unit used to express the amount of a
chemical substance, defined as the amount containing exactly
6.022×10236.022

 Formula: Moles=Given mass of substance /Molar mass

 Example: If you have 18.02 g of H₂O, the number of moles is:

Moles of H₂O=18.02 g divided by 18.02 g/mol=1 mol
