LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH

Position: Pre-service Teacher
Date: September 11, 2023 Time Allotment: 1 hour

I. Objectives
CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of how world literatures and other
text types serve as vehicles of expressing and resolving conflicts among
individuals or groups; also, how to use strategies in critical reading, listening,
and viewing, and affirmation and negation markers to deliver impromptu and
extemporaneous speeches.
PERFORMANCE The learner proficiently delivers an argumentative speech emphasizing how to

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

2. Identify a claim that is explicitly and implicitly made in a written text;
and
3. Compose an argumentative essay employing various types of
claims.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: Claims of fact, policy, and value

Instructional Aids: power point presentation, laptop, projector, television, HDMI
III. Procedures
a. Preparation:

• Greetings
• The teacher will ask a student to lead the prayer.
• The teacher will implement classroom rules (raising the right hand when answering,
listen when somebody is talking in front)
• The teacher will check the attendance.
• The teacher will present her/ his power point presentation.

b. Review:

• The teacher will ask anyone to recall the past lesson/ discussion.

Motivation:( Metacognitive Strategy: Think- Aloud)

• The teacher will ask 3 volunteers in the class. Each volunteer will be given an envelop
with jumbled letters inside of it. They are going to arrange it and post it on the board,
and ask them a brief definition about the word they were formed.

Words to arrange:

Materials Used: envelop, printed jumbled letters, double sided tape.

c. Presentation:

• The teacher will show the topic with the intended learning outcomes.
• The teacher will briefly discuss the intended learning outcomes of the topic to be
discuss.

d. Activity Proper (4A’s: Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, Application)

Activity : ( Metacognitive Strategy: Self- Assessment )

• The teacher will ask all students to rate their prior knowledge about the topic.
(1 is the lowest and 10 is the highest)
• The teacher will instruct the students to write their self-assessment rating in a 1/8 sheet
of paper and it is up to the student to put their name or not, however, they should pass
it in front according to the numbers of rating. Through this activity, the teacher will have
an idea about the student’s level of knowledge in the topic.

Analysis: ( Metacognitive Strategy: Questioning )

• The teacher will pick random students and ask what their opinion about the Claims of
fact are, policy, and value.

• The teacher will give a short feedback based on student’s opinion.

Abstraction:
For a Speaker: A claim is the main topic of an argument where the speaker tries to assert on his or her
beliefs, ideas or actions.

For a Writer: A claim is the central statement of a text where the writer tries to prove in the text by providing
details, explanations and other types of evidence.

Other characteristics of a good claim:


• A claim should be argumentative and debatable.
• A claim should be specific and focused.
• A claim should be interesting and engaging.
• A claim should be logical.

Here are three different examples of claim:


1. The status of the Philippine economy has dropped due to Covid-19.
2.A constitutional provision on Racial Discrimination needs to be strengthened in the country.
3. Mobile Phones have been very beneficial than computers during the pandemic.
Explicit and Implicit Claims
The definition of explicit is, “to fully and clearly express something, leaving nothing implied.”
Something is explicit when it is clearly stated and spelled out and there is no room for confusion. On the
other hand, the definition of implicit is, “implied or understood though not plainly or directly expressed.”
Something is, therefore, implicit when it is not directly stated but is either suggested in the wording or
necessary to execute the purpose.

Three types of Claims

1. CLAIM OF FACT- A claim whether something is true or untrue but there must always be
potential for controversy, conflict and change. A claim that reports, describes, predicts and
shows cause and effect. A claim that something has existed (past), exists (present) or will exist
(future).

2. CLAIM OF POLICY- A claim that urges that an action be taken or discontinued in specific
policies. A claim that shows that a problem exists and it’s good to solve it in a certain way.

3. CLAIM OF VALUE- A claim that gives judgment about morality, beauty, merit or wisdom. A claim
that compares and contrasts a problem with a similar one in another time and/or place A claim
that is based on preference such as likes or dislikes, good or bad.

Read article below. Do a Group Discussion whether each underlined sentence is a claim or not.

As I go through life, I am aware that there will always be trials and challenges. For a handicapped person
like myself, life is almost synonymous with the word struggle. 1I have to continuously show the world that I
can be useful and productive like normal individuals. The success of handicapped people who have helped
themselves rests on private and public institutions that are ready and willing to give the disabled a chance
to earn a living. 2We the disabled are still a part of society and are entitled to the human rights all normal
persons enjoy.
