INVESTIGATING THE TRANSISTOR SWITCH

Apparatus

A prototype board, two voltmeters, one micrometer and milliammeter, 10kΩ and
390Ω resistors, 100KΩ potentiometer, an LED, a D.C. power supply unit (6 volts) and
a (ZTX300, BPY51 or BC184L) transistor.

Procedure

1. Set up the circuit as shown in Fig 1 adjust the potentiometer so that Vbe reads
zero volts.
2. Record the voltages Vbe and Vce
3. Slowly adjust the variable resistor until the LED lights and again record the
voltages Vbe and Vce.
4. Repeat procedure 3 but this time for each small increase in Vbe (say 0.1 volts)
note and record the corresponding change in the base current (Ib), collector
voltage (Vce) and collector current (Ic).
Tabulation

Vbe /V Vce /V Ib /μA Ic /mA

Questions

1. Using your results answer the following questions

a) What can you say about the Vce when the transistor is OFF, (LED
OFF)?

b) What is the Vbe when the transistor is just switched ON?

c) What is the Vce when the transistor is ON?

Is the voltage the same for all Base-emitter voltages after the transistor
has switched ON?

2. Using your readings plot two graphs (attache your graphs)

a) Vce (volts) against Vbe (volts)
b) Ic (mA) against Ib (μA)
