PERSONAL COMPUTER
Personal Computer (PC) is a machine capable of performing calculations andinstructions
quickly and repetitively. Because it is designed to be used by a single person a time, a PC is
generally smaller, less expensive, and easier to use than supercomputers, mainframe computers,
and computer workstations. These kinds of computers usually have more computational power
than a PC. The PC, on the other hand, is generally larger thanand more powerful than the
handheld computers like personal digital assistants (PDAs), and gaming devices.
PCs consists of electronic circuitry that is called a microprocessor, such as the central
processing unit (CPU). CPU directs logical and arithmetical functions and executes computer
programs. A PC also has electronic memory known as random access memory (RAM) to
temporarily store programs and data, as well as external storage devices—such as hard, floppy,
compact disc (CD- ROM), and digital video disc (DVD) drives. These storage devices are used
to permanently store programs and data. A PC user enters information andcommands via a
keyboard or a painting device called a mouse. Information fromthe PCis displayed on a video
monitor or on a liquid crystal display (LCD) video screen, or it can be printed on laser, dot-
matrix, or inkjet printers. PCs are run by software that is called the operating system.
PCs have revolutionized entertainment, science, the media, art, medicine, education, and
business because they provide computational abilities at lowcost to people with no extensive
programming experience. PCs enable artists to envision andmanipulate images. Musicians use
them for learning, creating, and recording music. Businesses track finances and forecast
companyperformance using PCs. News reports cancompose news stories on portable PCs, called
laptops, and electronically submit these stories from remote locations. Many people work at
home and communicate with fellowworkers via their PCs in a practice known as
telecommunication networks to find and sendinformation on any subject.
PCs are now commonly used in everyday life. They can be used to send electronic mail,
to write school reports or fiction, to balance checksbooks and keep financial data, or totrack
news stories and visitWeb sites.
