READING COMPREHENSION
READING 1
Have you got a dog? What does it look like? Is it big or small? Has it got long hair or short hair? There are
many different types, or breeds, of dogs in the world and some of them are quite strange. These are
three of our favourites:

The Hungarian Puli is famous for its funny long hair. Pulis don’t mind the rain, because their amazing
hair is resistant to water. Historically from Asia, the Hungarian Puli is over 1,000 years old. But people
believe other types of Pulis are over 6,000 years old. Pulis are clever and athletic dogs, and they love
playing.

The Xoloitzcuintli (show-low-eats-queent-lee), or Xolo, is a Mexican dog and it’s over 3,000 years old.
The Xolo is also called the Mexican Hairless Dog and it’s easy to see why – most Xolos haven’t got any
hair! Like humans, the sun is bad for them. Adult Xolos are clever and calm. They’re great pets.

This strange animal looks like a baby sheep, but it’s a dog! Named after the Town of Bedlington in
England, this terrier hasn’t got a very long history. It's about 230 years old. Bedlington Terriers have
got short curly hair. They’re friendly and clever, and they love people.

2. Answer the questions.

1. Why does the writer talk about Hungarian Pulis, Xoloitzcuintlis and Bedlington Terriers?

2. How is the Hungarian Puli’s long hair helpful?

3. Is the Hungarian Puli the first type of Puli? How do you know?

4. What problem has the Xolo got?

5. How did the Bedlington Terrier get its name?

READING 2
LONDON WITH A
DIFFERENCE
Are you planning a trip to London at the moment? Of course, you must see all of the usual places:
Big Ben, The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace … But you can also see some unusual places and
things.

Neal’s Yard Water Clock is a good place to start. Neal’s Yard Water Clock is above a shop in Covent
Garden. This clock runs on water and it’s quite precise. Every hour, figures on the clock start
moving. It’s great to watch, but be careful! One of the figures likes pouring water on the heads of
the people under him.

Another interesting place is the Thin House in Knightsbridge. This extraordinary house is thinner
than normal houses. On one side, it’s only about 1.67 metres from the front of the house to the
back! Luckily, the other side of the house is wider than that.
Do you think it’s hard to live in a house like the Thin House? Well, it’s easier than living at 23-24
Leinster Terrace in Bayswater. When you look at the front of the houses on Leinster Terrace, they
all look the same. But two of them are very different. They’re not real! Behind the houses, you can
see the truth. Numbers 23-24 are just front walls, like houses in a street scene from a Hollywood
film. Now that’s unusual!

1. Read the text.

2. Find the following information in the text.

1. The names of three famous places in London:
............................ , ............................. , .............................
2. The name of an unusual house in London:
3. The addresses of two houses in London:

3. Complete the sentences.

1. The clock in Neal’s Yard is unusual because
2. It isn’t a good idea to stand under the clock because
3. The Thin House is different from
4. On one side, the distance between the front of the Thin House and the back is
5. You can’t live at 23-24 Leinster Terrace because
6. You can see houses like 23-24 Leinster Terrace in
