READING AND WRITING
I had a great time on my adventure trip to Canada. I went with two teachers and all my classmates. I missed
my family at first but by the end of the holiday, I didn´t want to go home!
On my favourite day, we went on a really long walk in the mountains. We had to carry all our things in bags
on our backs which was hard work but we never got bored because we all chatted the whole time. We had a
rock climbing lesson just before our picnic lunch and later that afternoon we arrived at a lake where we
camped for the night. Three of the others tried to fish, without success! I helped build the fire instead. The
teachers and two of the older students made supper, then we sat in our blankets around the fire and sang
songs and made wishes in the dark.
We decided not to sleep inside the tents, but outdoors because we wanted to look at the stars. Some of the
boys made “bear” noises trying to make us afraid, but we were still laughing at midnight because we were
having so much fun. I´ll never forget that day.

READING AND WRITING: Holiday in Greece
Dear Jane,
Here I am in Greece and I think this is the best holiday of my life. The flight was great. The weather in
Chalkidiki is fantastic and the sea is really hot. I am staying at a small hotel by the sea.
Every day I go snorkelling and I sit in the sun. I want to look terrific when I come home. In the afternoons, I go
sightseeing. I discovered that it is best to rent a car because some of the places of interest are quite far from
the hotel. I often travel with some nice Spanish people I met at my hotel so I can practise my Spanish a bit.
They are very friendly. Every night I go to different restaurants and clubs with them. I know my sister would
love the clubs! They are really great. Guess who I met at a disco last night? My best friend, Gina! I was so
surprised. I didn’t know she was in Greece. We arranged to meet tomorrow morning. We want to look for
some souvenirs in the local shops.
One more thing. Two days ago I went to watch the sun go down and I found something on the beach. It’s the
most beautiful piece of ancient jewellery.
I can’t wait to see you. I will tell you all about Greece when I come back.
Love,
Sophie

READING AND WRITING: Karaoke
Karaoke was created thirty years ago in the city of Kobe, Japan. It actually means ‘empty orchestra’ and was
originally popular with businessmen who wanted to relax after a day’s work. With time, however, karaoke
has become extremely popular and it is now a hit in bars, restaurants, hotels, parties and even at weddings!
Today a lot of karaoke fans prefer to buy CDs including special karaoke versions of the songs by their
favourite artist. They also often use karaoke players available on the Internet. That way, they have the
opportunity to practice singing at home before they show their talents in front of others.
In twenty years karaoke’s popularity has spread far beyond Japan and it has got to the rest of the Far East,
North America and Europe. It appears that the rest of the world also enjoys the idea of having a drink and
singing songs among friends! Anywhere friends or family meet for a good time, they enjoy holding the
microphone and singing along with the music. It is so much fun!

READING COMPREHENSION: Owls
Most human beings are awake during the day and sleep all night. Owls live the opposite way.
Owls are nocturnal. This means that they sleep all day and stay awake at night. Because owls
are nocturnal, this means they must eat at night. But finding food in the dark is difficult. To
help them, they have special eyes and ears.
Owls have very large eyes. These eyes absorb more light than normal. Since there is little light
during the night, it is helpful to be able to absorb more of it. This helps owls find food in the
dark.
Owls also have very good hearing. Even when owls are in the trees, they can hear small
animals moving in the grass below. This helps owls catch their prey even when it is very dark.
Like owls, mice are also nocturnal animals. Mice have an excellent sense of smell. This helps
them find food in the dark.
Being nocturnal helps mice to hide from the many different animals that want to eat them.
Most of the birds, snakes, and lizards that like to eat mice sleep at night—except, of course,
owls!
4. Decide if the following statements are true or false. Find evidence in the text.
b. Owls can find food in the dark using their sense of sound only.

c. Owls cannot hear very well.
