Helping verbs (is, are, am, can, was, were) are, as the name suggests,
verbs that help another verb. They provide support and add additional
meaning. Helping verbs on the other hand, assists the main verb to form a
complete thought. Without helping verbs, certain ideas would be impossible
to express, and our speech and writing would be dull and incomplete.

Here are some examples of helping verbs in sentences:

1. Mariah is looking for her keys still.

2. I am sorry for what I have done.

3. You are never too old to learn.

4. The children were playing at the park yesterday.

5. He was elected as the new president of the state.

Statements may be changed into questions by using one of the helping


verbs is, are, am, can and etc. at the beginning. These helping verbs who or
what they are or what qualities they have.

For example:

1. Filipinos are hospitable.

Are Filipinos hospitable?

2. She is beautiful.

Is she beautiful?

3. They are engineers.

Are they engineers?
