For environmental reasons, should we be considering eating ‘meat’
that has been produced in a laboratory? Discuss both sides of the
argument and conclude with your personal opinion. I will now begin my presentation. . . As the world’s population is increasing, it would become nearly impossible to satisfy such a gigantic demand for food. In the same manner, it would be difficult to satisfy the people’s demands for meat. Recently, lab-grown meat has indicated a silver-lining as it enables us to mass produce meat which is rich in quality and nutrients, and has less environmental impacts as compared to the livestock meat. In this length of presentation, I would consider both advantages and disadvantages of lab-grown meat, and in the end I would deliver my opinion as per its use.
I would first discuss about its benefits
It has positive impact on environment: Research has indicated that there are enormous positive impacts of cultured meat on consumers and the environment. Cell-based meats are environmentally friendly when compared to livestock meat production. Hence, widespread production of cell-based meat may be an opportunity to reduce methane, and other lethal gas emissions. Impact on health and safety Cell-based meat production is carried out in a controlled environment, which prevents it from possible contamination during animal slaughtering. Furthermore, the safety of cell-based meat is maintained and protected as it is lab-grown, not produced from the animals raised in a small area which abolishes the risk of an outbreak like influenza. Lab-grown meat does not contain any allergic substance compared to other meat products such as plant-based meat. Moreover, it is rich in nutrients too.
Now I would like to discuss the disadvantages of lab-grown meat:
It has Impact on carbon footprint
Downsides faced during the production and marketing of cell-based meat are expected to increase the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Cell-based meat is expected to produce more carbon dioxide than potent methane, which takes a long time to dissolve; however, it is still unclear whether cultured meat will be a more climatically sustainable alternative. Moreover, there are also ethical concerns as the fetuses are taken by slaughtering the pregnant cows or animals. Religious view Cultured meat raises innumerable religious and philosophical concerns. Religious authorities are still discussing if cell-based meat is Halal or not. There is an obvious understanding among scholars that the cellular origin of cultured meat from pigs and other harem species is against Islamic law and never be permitted for consumption. Conclusion In my firm opinion, lab-grown meat is far more useful than the regular meat as it is cheaper to make, environmentally-friendly, and can cope with future meat demands of the people. There are certain ethical and religious concerns associated with its production, however, they once solved, lab-grown meat can be an effective source of meat, the meat enriched in whatever minerals we want, and is the future. We should of course consider it eating. . . I hereby end my presentation. . . Thank You for your attention. . .
