**Report Text (Kelas XII Bahasa Inggris)**

**Definition**

Report text is a type of text that describes information or presents facts


about a particular subject or phenomenon. It provides factual and
objective information without expressing personal opinions or feelings.
Report texts are often used to describe things like animals, plants, places,
phenomena, and objects.

**Purpose**

The main purpose of report text is to classify and describe a subject or


phenomenon based on observation, research, or analysis. It aims to
inform the readers about the features and characteristics of the subject.

**Generic Structure**

1. **General Classification**

This part introduces the subject of the report. It gives an overview or


general information about the subject.

Example: “Dolphins are marine mammals found worldwide in shallow


seas and oceans. They are highly intelligent and social animals.”

2. **Description**

This part provides detailed information about the subject. It usually


describes its features, behavior, functions, and other important aspects.

Example: “Dolphins have a streamlined body, which helps them swim


swiftly in the water. They communicate using a series of clicks and
whistles.”

**Language Features**

1. **Present Tense**

Report text typically uses simple present tense to describe facts or


general truths.

Example: “Tigers live in the forests of Asia and Africa.”


2. **Technical or Scientific Terms**

The use of specific terms related to the subject is common in report text.

Example: “Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use


sunlight to synthesize food.”

3. **Passive Voice**

The passive voice may be used to emphasize the action rather than the
subject.

Example: “The data is collected from various sources.”

4. **General Nouns**

Report text uses general nouns to refer to the group or category being
described.

Example: “Mammals, birds, reptiles, etc.”

5. **Relational Processes**

Verbs like “is,” “are,” “have,” and “belong to” are frequently used to
define and describe.

Example: “Whales are the largest mammals in the world.”

**Examples of Report Text**

1. **Title: Kangaroos**

**General Classification:**

Kangaroos are marsupials native to Australia and New Guinea. They are
known for their powerful hind legs and long tail.

**Description:**

Kangaroos can leap great distances, often covering up to 25 feet in a


single bound. They use their tail for balance and to sit upright. The
females carry their young, known as joeys, in a pouch until they are ready
to live independently.
2. **Title: The Water Cycle**

**General Classification:**

The water cycle is a natural process through which water moves from
the Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back again.

**Description:**

The cycle begins with evaporation, where water from oceans, lakes, and
rivers turns into vapor. The vapor rises into the air, where it cools and
condenses to form clouds. Once the clouds become heavy, precipitation
occurs, returning water to the Earth in the form of rain, snow, or hail.

**Exercise**

1. Write a report text about “Elephants.”

2. Analyze the structure and language features in the report text.
