ISE I Health and Fitness Lesson – Multi-Text Reading

Task 1 – Speaking

You are going to read some texts about health and fitness for students. Think about the
following questions and then talk about your ideas with your partner.

 What do you do to keep fit?

 Do you do regular exercise?
 What problems stop you from exercising?
 What are the different types of exercise you can do?
 What types of exercise do you like? Are there any you don’t like?

Task 2 - Reading

Now there are four short texts for you to read and some questions for you to answer.

Questions 1-5

Read questions 1-5 first and then read texts A, B, C and D below the questions.

As you read each text, decide which text each question refers to. Choose one letter — A, B, C
or D — and write it on the lines below. You can use any letter more than once.

Which text:

1. asks for advice about money __________

2. mentions some unhealthy habits __________
3. expresses worry about something __________
4. provides suggestions about ways to exercise every day __________
5. describes two different types of exercises __________
Text A

Subject: First month

Hi Rob,

How are you? I’ve just finished my first month here at university. I can’t believe it’s passed so quickly!

I’m really enjoying it here, but I have a problem. I can’t find any time to exercise at all. I have to rush
from one class to another and they are giving us so much homework that I never have time to go to
the gym or play any sports. I’m concerned that I will have a really unhealthy lifestyle here and I don’t
want that.

How do you find time to exercise and study at the same time? Have you got any tips for me?

Write soon, Jim

Text B

Students: How do you exercise cheaply?

Liz: I went to the gym yesterday to try and join. But it is so expensive! I can’t
afford to pay that much each month. What do other students do to exercise
without paying so much?
Peter: I’m a member of the football team at university. The training is free and
we don’t have to pay for the buses to matches either. Why not join a team?

Alice: I try to put exercise into my daily routine so that I exercise for free. I walk
to classes instead of taking the bus, I use the stairs instead of the lift, and I
go for a run at the weekends.

John: I agree with Alice. There are lots of ways to exercise without paying. Ask a
friend to help you as well – you can go for a walk together at lunch time
and it’s more fun than doing it alone.

How much exercise does a

student need?

Many students find it difficult to keep

fit – there is the stress of homework
and busy class schedules. And in
addition, some students have
unhealthy habits, for example eating
fast food, drinking alcohol, going to
bed late… This makes it difficult to
find the time or the motivation to do
exercise.
A balanced and healthy exercise
routine for any adult includes two
elements – cardio exercise and
strength training.
Cardio exercise – this uses large
muscle groups to increase heart rate.
You need to do at least two and a half
hours of cardio per week, for
example, walking, jogging, swimming,
aerobics.
Strength training – this increases
muscle strength and power. You need
to do this twice a week, for example,
weight training, push ups, planks.

Students, like all adults, need to

ensure they are doing both types of
exercise each week.

Task 3 — Reading into writing

Write an article (100-130 words) for a school or a college magazine about student fitness.

Use the information you read in Task 2 to:

 explain the reasons some students don’t do exercise

 describe the type of exercise students need to do
 give some examples of how students can exercise every day

Before you begin, read each text again and then summarise it to your partner. Write your
short summary here and try to use different words where you can:

Text A

Text B

Text C

Text D

You should plan your short article before you start writing. Think about what you want to say
and make some notes to help you in this box:

Planning notes

(No marks are given for these planning notes)

Now write your article of 100-130 words. Try to use your own words as far as possible —
don’t just copy sentences from the reading texts.
When you have finished your article, spend 2–3 minutes reading through what you have written. Make
sure you have covered all three bullet points. Remember to check how you made use of the reading
texts, as well as the language and organisation of your writing.
