PAPER SETTING METHODS

NIRMALA P. G.
IFHE
Hyderabad.
OVERVIEW

In this session we look at

• The different types of test items

• The construction of a question paper
INTRODUCTION
• A test is meant to examine someone’s knowledge of something to
determine what he/she has learned

• The construction of tests and assessments is considered to be an art that

requires the knowledge of the principles and techniques of test
construction

• The most common form of test, the written assessment, tries to evaluate a
writer’s performance or potential through a writing task

• In this session on paper setting methods, we look at the most significant

form of written assessment – the question paper
DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEST ITEMS
A written test consists of different types of test items.
Test items differ on the basis of the type of responses they involve:

• Free items: responses are free/the respondent has the freedom to respond

• Fixed items: the respondent does not have this freedom

Two general categories of question types

• Selected-response: several options--objective test items
• Constructed-response: short answer questions, and essay type questions
ESSAY QUESTIONS

“Essay type questions provide the freedom of response that is needed to

adequately assess the ability of students to formulate problems, organize,
integrate, and evaluate ideas and information, and apply knowledge and
skills.”
- Pathak 2012

There can be two significant ways of drafting an essay question

• Direct Question: terminates with a question mark (?)

• ‘Discuss’ Question: a statement followed by an explicit instruction such as
‘Discuss’ or ‘Evaluate this statement’.
Short Answer Type Questions
• Answer to a short answer type question requires at the most three value
points
• Allows testing the candidate’s knowledge and grasp of basic concepts and
principles and a wide range of subject matter
Objective Type Questions
Objective because they have a single right or best answer
• Supply type: require the student to supply the answer in a word or two (e.g.
short answer and completion type)
• Selection type: require the student to select the correct answer from a given
number of alternatives (e.g., matching, true/false, multiple choice)
CONSTRUCTING AND DESIGNING A TEST

Steps to set a good question paper:

1. Preparation of Design
2. Preparation of Blueprint
3. Preparation of Items
4. Editing of the Question Paper
5. Preparation of the Scoring Key and Marking Scheme
6. Preparation of the Question-wise Analysis
1. PREPARATION OF DESIGN: Weightage given to
• Instructional Objectives
• Content
• Type of Questions
• Difficulty Level
2. PREPARATION OF BLUEPRINT/FRAMEWORK

Three dimensional chart which indicates the distribution of questions

• objective-wise (knowledge, comprehension, application, skill, creativity)

• content-wise (subunit I, subunit 11, subunit III)

• form-wise (objective, short answer, essay)

3. PREPARATION OF ITEMS
• Questions should be prepared with utmost care and according to the
weightage given in the blueprint

• Generally, three types of questions are used: objective type, short answer
type and essay type

4. EDITING THE QUESTION PAPER

• Giving total marks and total time

• Instructions to examinees
• Assembling the questions
5. PREPARATION OF THE SCORING KEY AND MARKING SCHEME
• Scoring key for objective type questions: question number and answer key
• Marking scheme for the short answer and essay type questions:
 gives the expected outlines of the answer
 the marks that each value point and aspect of the question should have

6. PREPARATION OF THE QUESTION-WISE ANALYSIS

Question-wise analysis is prepared by the examiner in terms of:
curricular objectives, form of question, difficulty level, marks, and
estimated time for each question
This analysis is very helpful to check the question paper against the blueprint.
CONCLUSION

In this session we have given a brief outline of a very common and

important test tool – the question paper. We have given you some key
points to be borne in mind while preparing a question paper.
