Netball Notes

Week Ending Sunday, 19 May 2024

Term 2 , Week Congratulations to our Grammar teams this week, with a few wins and close
5 Wrap Up losses. It is clear our players are working hard and improving their skills and
teamwork. Thank you again to all the parents who help score every week, and the
coaches for their time and effort with our players.

Sophie Durant
Director of Netball

Results and a recap from coaches are as follows:

Grammar 1 v FNAE | Cindy Hughes

After a very slow start from the Grammar 1 girls, we found ourselves down by 10
goals at the end of the first quarter and with a lot of the ground to make up. To the
girls credit they dug deep and played some very nice netball for the next three
quarters and matched their opponents every step of the way till the final buzzer.
We actually won the second half of netball and had some fantastic passages of
play. Our young guns Anna, Kelsey and Majella all had strong games, and really put
their bodies on the line to turn over the ball for us numerous times. Even though we
didn't get the win, I could actually see so many positives in this game. I was really
pleased to see the girls come together and put into practice what we have been
doing at training, and I loved how we backed each other up on and off the court.
Next week we will be aiming for a stronger more dynamic start to our game, so that
we have more control and are not in chasing mode for the full game. The final score
was FNAE 33 Grammar 24.

Grammar 2 v Marlins | Sophie Durant

Grammar 2 played a great game against Neptune Marlins this week with a very
convincing win in the end. The girls worked hard to drive and confuse the space
around their players. Our defensive end was strong, and our attacking end
rewarded many turnovers. Shout out to Aspyn who was awarded MVP for her
fantastic shooting.

Grammar 3 v BYE | Chloe Beauchamp

Grammar 4 v Phyredragons | Cindy Hughes
With both teams sitting on equal points on the top of the table, we knew that
tonight's game was always going to be a hard-fought contest. And it sure didn't
disappoint. The girls were holding a two-goal lead at half time and were working
hard to try and build on this as they went into the third. They managed to extend
the lead by another two goals and went into the final quarter with a renewed
energy to finish the game off with a 18-9 win. This game certainly highlighted were
our issues and weaknesses are, so in light of this, next week at training we will be
working on our control of the ball and taking our time when passing to our
teammates. The player of the match went to Malieka Gela and special mention
goes to Cleo, Annie and Lilly who also had very strong games. Well done Grammar
4.

Grammar 5 v Phyrespirits | Grace Ironside

Grammar 5 had a tough game this week but managed to win three of the four
quarters. Despite, going down in the last quarter, I could not fault the girls this
week. The girls all played their own game and showed lots of grit this week in a
somewhat heated match. However, I could not be prouder of how they played and
the execution of everything from our last trainings. Big shout out to Bella Maff for
her perseverance in the last quarter.

Grammar 6 v Phyrepower | Grace Ironside

Grammar 6 had a remarkable game this week managing to win their first game of
the season! After a tough loss last week, the girls improved tremendously. Their
attacking drives were on point and defence was right on the body this week
resulting in many intercepts. Shooters worked in tough conditions this week with
the wind, but a special shout out goes to Ruby, whose shooting was on fire.

Grammar 7 v Flash | Georgia Gardiner

This week’s game was by far the best game that the girls have played all season. I
am beyond proud of all of their efforts, as each player applied the work covered in
training and put maximum effort into their gameplay. Even though Phoenix is on
top of the ladder, the girls managed to win the first two quarters and only had an
eight-point difference in the final score. Shoutout to Lexie Warne for her strong
defence and Katherine Dowling for achieving MVP due to her incredible shooting of
the night. So proud of this team and I look forward to working with them for the rest
of the season. Great job girls!

Grammar 8 v Cathedral Clovers | Anjali Rao, Olivia Arnaboldi & Matilda Arnold
Grammar 8 played their best game yet Wednesday night! With 11 players a lot of
changes were made each quarter, but all the girls adapted well and whether on or
off the court supported their teammates! Although we didn’t get a win, we played
a tough competitive game that we were leading for a while! We turned over heaps
of balls, brought the ball down the court beautifully and converted our goals. The
score was so close, and the girls did not give up resulting in loss of only two! We
have seen immense improvement from just last week and can’t wait to see the girls
progress and keep playing amazing games like this!

Grammar 9 v Fury | Justin Pfeffer, Rikki Doherty & Olivia Easton

Grammar 9 played the best all season, scoring seven goals. Unfortunately, it
wasn’t enough to get the win they hoped for. Emma Hogard’s shooting practice
has really paid off, seeing her secure majority of tonight’s goals. Allegra Plozza is
also showing growth as an excellent attacking player. Tonight’s MVP, Ruby
Gibbons, fought hard to create space, feed the ball and make some great
intercepts. It was great seeing the team morale lifted each time a goal was scored.
Looking forward to developing new skills at our next training.

Grammar 10 v Cathedral Chillies | Naomi Torie, Emma Jarvis & Lucia Parmegiani
Grammar 10 played an excellent game this week. It is great to see the girls
showcasing what we have been working on at training. We still have a long way to
go but the girls are doing so well and improving with every game! We are all so
proud.

Grammar 11 v Rollaways | Lisa Robertson

Grammar 11 played Rollaways in an impressive match this week. Unfortunately, the
Rollaways got off to a very strong start, but the Grammar girls fought back and only
lost by four goals. Our stars for this week were Gemma and Grace for their
wonderful teamwork in the circle as GA and GS. They really relied on each other to
get the ball to the post so they could have a shot at goal. Congratulations to
Gemma for being awarded MVP for the game. Next week, we will continue to work
on slowing the game through the mid court, so we have better control of the ball.

Grammar 12 v Rockaways | Colleen Heib

Grammar 12 got off to a slow start in the first half against Rockaways this week but
pulled themselves back to come away with a 10-5 win. The girls showed great
teamwork and support towards each other through the whole match. Serra
demonstrated her shooting skills with an impressive six goals in the second half.
Isla showed her versatility on the court, moving from defence to WA to help the
team move the ball down the court and feed into the shooters. Congratulations to
Vaidehi for receiving MVP and the Maccas award for her hard work through the mid
court. Keep working hard, girls!

Grammar 13 v Cathedral Chiefs | Zoe Johansen

Grammar 13 played their best game yet against Cathedral. The girls lost 7-1 but
continued to push until the last whistle. As we practised in training, the girls all
improved their defence and dogging skills. Next week, we will look at improving our
attacking skills. The MVP was awarded to Anabel Mathew.

Grammar 14 v Saints Sharks | Alisha McNeven

The hard work and commitment the Grammar 14 girls have put into training and
games has paid off over the last two weeks! We celebrated our second win of the
season, walking away with a 9-0 win against Saints Sharks. Our defence was
strong, with many intercepts made and fantastic teamwork shown by all players.
Quick passes and fast feet allowed us to get the ball down to our shooters, who did
a fantastic job. We will continue working on our footwork and finding space on the
court in training next week. Congratulations to this week's MVP, Gofiwa, for
showing amazing support of her teammates when attacking and defending.
Shoutout also to Quinne, our MVP from last week and shooting superstar.

Grammar 15 v SCCC Skittles | Elspeth Jones

Thank you to the girls in Grammar 15 who helped with the training session. It was
great to see the older girls sharing their netball skills with the younger girls. The
girls had their best game with great passing, trying to get in front of their defensive
player and some great shooting. There were many goal attempts, however, the
wind made scoring a bit tricky. We had a win and congratulations to Ksenia for a
strong game in defence.

Grammar 16 v Cathedral Chickadees | Grace Ironside

Grammar 16 had a fantastic game this week. The girls focus for the game was
communication and passing which they executed perfectly. Throughout the game
the girls worked on their spreading out and running towards the ball. To top off a
great game, they came away with the win. Grammar 16 were an absolute pleasure
to coach this week.

Grammar 17 v Seashells | Kate Irvine

Grammar 17 trained with the other Grammar Set Go teams this week. The older girls
helped the younger players practice their passing and movement towards the ball.
Grammar 17 had good game against Neptune’s Seashells. The girls showed their
shooting strength, scoring four goals. Next week we will work on our movement in
the goal third to ensure quick passes into the goal circle and improve our chances
to have a shot. Ajna received the MVP award for her quick movement around the
court. Isabella was the McDonald’s Award recipient for her goal shooting and
encouragement on court. Well done, girls.

Grammar 18 v Saints Scallywags | Chloe Beauchamp

This week, the girls versed Saints Scallywags in a great game. They showed a lot of
improvement as the game progressed by calling to their team mates to ask for the
ball and standing still with ball possession. Charlie found out that she loves playing
in Goal Defence so that she can catch the rebound. Vedika became incredibly
confident at throwing the ball in when it went out by the other team. Laurel worked
incredibly hard to feed the ball down the court by driving for the ball. The team
scored one goal, which left them tied with Saints Scallywags. Overall, the girls had
fun and shared the ball equally between their teammates.
