Chapter 11-Linear Equation (II)
Chapter 11-Linear Equation (II)
1) A linear equation in two variables is an equation involving two variables that have raised
to the power of 1 and a constant.
2) If one of the variables in a linear equation in two variables is given, then the value of the
other can be determined.
Exercise (A)
1) Determine whether each of the following equations are linear equations in two variables.
a) x + 3y = 10 e) 2y = 3x + 4
b) 2x2 - y = 8 f) 4xy = 9 + 3y
c) 2a - b = 3 g) 6y = 5x
d) p2 - 2 = 3q
d) Jaylyn is xcm tall while her sister is ycm. Jaylyn is 23 cm taller than her sister.
e) Karim has RMp whereas Kassim has RMq as their pocket money from their
father. Their father paid a total sum of RM 15.
f) The length of a rectangle is 3k cm and the breath is l cm. The perimeter of the
rectangle is 98 cm.
g)
5cm The area of triangle shown is 60cm2
(s - 4r) cm
1) Simultaneous linear equations in two variables are a pair of linear equations which consist
of two same variables and have a common solution.
Example
Exercise (B)
a) 2x - y = 2 d) h + k = 1
x-y=1 h-k=5
b) a = b2 e) 2w = 3s
a+b=1 4w - 3s = 15
c) e + f = 5 f) xy + y = 2
e+g=7 2xy + x = 7
a) 2a + 3b = 5 f) 4s = -5 - t
b = 3a 6s + 5t = 3
b) 2j - 4k = 6 g) x + y = 3
k = 2j 2x + 3y = 7
c) m = 5n - 1 h) a - b = 1
2m - 3n = 5 3a + 4b = 17
d) 3p + q = 5 i) h - 2k = 4
2p - 3q = 7 2h + k = 3
e) 3r = 2s - 4 j) 3p + 4q = 10
r - 3 = 5s 2p - q = -8
a) 3x + y = 5 f) ½p + 3q = 8
x-y=3 2p + 4q = 8
b) x + 2y = 5 g) 2y + 12x = 30
3x - 2y = -17 3y + 7x = 23
c) 2j - k = -4 h) 5v + 3w = -19
3j + 4k = 5 2v - 7w = 17
d) 3l - 2m = 11 i) 2c = 10 + 3d
2l + 3m = 3 3c + 2d = -9/2
e) 3m + 2n + 5 = 0 j) 7m + 3n = -9
4m + 3n = -6 2m + 6n = -14
