FINAL PROJECT: WRITTEN WORK

Topic The importance of heavy machine inspection to

: reduce fatal workplace injuries.
Inspections of heavy machinery are a fundamental pillar to guarantee the safety,
efficiency and durability of operations in the construction sector.

Why are inspections so important?

o Accident prevention: By detecting mechanical, electrical or structural failures in
time, accidents are prevented from occurring that could put the lives of the
operator and other people in the workplace at risk.
o Maximizing uptime.
o Cost reduction.
o Extension of the useful life of the equipment.
o Improved quality of work: Machinery in optimal conditions guarantees work of
higher quality and precision.

Some of the most common accidents caused by heavy machinery:

o Accidents due to machinery kickback.
o Crushing due to collision with another machine.
o Trauma due to falling cargo.
o Various injuries due to entanglement of machine cables.
o Collisions, collisions or accidents due to lack of verification of blind spots.
o Crushing of workers between a heavy machine and a stationary object

3 key points to prevent accidents during the operation of machinery:

1. Inspection: They are preventive strategies to identify hazards and control risks
before they cause harm to people or the workplace.
Inspections typically cover a wide range of components and systems, including:
- Mechanical components: Engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes,
axles, tracks.
- Electrical systems: Batteries, alternators, lighting systems, electronic controls,
etc.
- Structure: Chassis, cabins, arms, buckets, etc.
- Tires: Wear, pressure, damage.
- Fluid levels: Oil, coolant, fuel.
- Safety systems: Seat belts, alarms, warning lights.
2. Preventive maintenance: Perform scheduled tasks with the objective of preventing
failures and breakdowns. For example:
- Carry out checks and adjustments before starting the engine.
- Verify monitor panel configuration of all machines.
- Verify operation of work equipment controls (position and blocking).
3. Corrective Maintenance: Its objective is to repair the machinery and put it back
into operation.
For example:
- Hydraulic System: Failure: Oil leaks, pressure loss, overheating.
Repair: Replacing seals, repairing hoses,
purging the system.
- Engine: Failure: Overheating, loss of power, strange noises.
Repair: Replacement of spark plugs, cleaning
of injectors, repair or replacement of cylinder head,
inspection of the cooling system.

In conclusion, heavy machinery inspections are an investment that

generates great benefits in the long term. By ensuring the safety, efficiency
and durability of equipment, inspections help improve productivity, reduce
costs and protect the environment.
