Ch-8 INTRODUCTION TO TRIGONOMETRY

CLASS: X
IMPORTANT
CONCEPTS

Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with the study of

relationships between sides and angles of a triangle. It is derived from
Greek words, Tri
meaning Three , Gon means Angle and Metron means Measure.

Trigonometric ratio: The ratio of lengths of two sides of a right angled

triangle is called a Trigonometric Ratio. There are six trigonometric ratios.

• Trigonometric Identities:
A trigonometric identity is an equation involving trigonometric
ratios of an angle, where the equation holds true for a defined range
of values of the angle.
For the right triangle ABC, let 0°≤ A ≤ 90°
(i) sin2 A+ cos2 A=1
(ii) 1 + tan2 A= sec2 A
(iii) 1 +cot2 A= cosec2 A

1. If tan θ = a/x, find the value of x/√(a2+x2)

2. If cos A = 2/5, find the value of 4 + 4 tan2A

3. If cos θ + sin θ = √2 cos θ, show that cos θ – sin θ = √2 sin θ.

4. In the given figure, ABCD is a rectangle with AD = 12 cm and DC = 20 cm.

Line segment DE is drawn making an angle of 30° with AD, intersecting
AB at E. Find the length of DE and AE.
5. In figure, ΔPQR right angled at Q, PQ = 6 cm, PR = 12 cm, Determine QPR
and PRQ

7. Evaluate :

8. Express cos A in terms of cot A.

9. If tan θ = then the value of is

10. If 3 cot θ = 2, then the value of tan θ

11. If ΔABC is right angled at C, then the value of cos (A + B) is

12. If sin θ = cos θ, 0° < θ < 90°, then θ is equal to
