Prerequisite:
Knowledge of energy and different energy sources

Course Objective:
 To understand global and national energy scenario.
 To understand different energy policies.
 To learn knowledge of energy conservation, energy management and energy audit.
 To know operating principles of new emerging energy generation technologies and
their importance to meet energy demand.

Unit 1: introduction to Energy Sources 4

General introduction, energy consumption as a measure of prosperity, world energy futures,
energy sources and their availability, renewable energy sources, prospects of renewable
energy sources
Unit 2: Global Energy Scenario 5
hours
Role of energy in economic development and social transformation, Overall energy demand,
availability and consumption, Depletion of energy resources and its impact on economy, Non
proliferation of nuclear energy.
Unit 3: Indian Energy Scenario- 5
hours
Commercial and noncommercial forms of energy, Utilization pattern in the past, present and
also future prediction, Sector wise energy consumption. Indian Electricity Rule (IE Rule)
Unit 4: Energy Policy 6
hours
Energy policy issues at global level, national level and state level, Energy conservation act
2001, Electricity act 2003, Energy pricing and its impact on global variations. International
energy policies of G-8, G-20, OPEC and European union countries.
Unit 5: Energy Conservation 8

Introduction, principles of energy conservation, energy conservation planning, energy
conservation in residential and commercial sector, energy conservation measures in some of
the major enterprises, maintenance and energy conservation
Unit 6: Energy management & Audit 6
hours
Objectives of energy management, need and scope of energy audit, methodology, types of
energy audit, material and energy balance, energy auditing instruments, maintenance and
audit
Unit 7: Energy Storage 5
hours
Need for energy storage, Energy storage systems- Mechanical energy storage i) Pumped
hydro electric storage ii) compressed air iii) Flywheel- Electrical storage: Lead acid battery;
super capacitor

Unit 8: Emerging Technologies 6 hours


Magneto hydro dynamic power generation, fuel cells, geothermal energy, ocean thermal
energy conversion, appropriate energy technology for rural development, economic aspects
of conventional and renewable energy sources, future prospects of renewable energy in
India
Learning outcome:
At the end of the course;
 Students will have Knowledge of energy scenario and its importance to the society.
 Students can understand and suggest few energy management and energy
conservation techniques in daily life.
 Students will be aware of energy policies.
 Students can get the enraging technologies importance in today’s energy scenario.

Scheme of Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE):-


CIE consists of three tests each for a maximum of 50 marks. The performance of two best
out of three tests is considered and is scaled for a maximum of 30 marks.

Scheme of Semester End Examination (SEE):-


The question paper consists of 8 questions each for a maximum of 14 marks with two to
three sub divisions. The students are required to answer any five full questions out of eight
questions.
