Figure 3-4:BMS System Schematic

The protection and monitoring functions of the battery system are realized by the battery
management system (BMS). The BMS system of the battery system is managed in three levels,
namely tray BMU, MBMS, and BAMS. The main functions of each level of BMS are as follows:

➢ BMU (fixed in the battery pack): Monitors the voltage, temperature of the single cell and the total
voltage of a single tray and transmits the above information to the upper-level BMS in real time
through the CAN protocol, which can control the voltage balance of the single cell.
➢ MBMS (rack level, built in the high-voltage box): Detect the total voltage and total current of the
entire battery rack, and transmit the above information to the upper-level BMS in real time
through the CAN protocol. It can display the capacity and health status of the battery during
charging and discharging. Controls relay switches and the voltage balance of cluster-level units.
➢ BAMS (system level): Collects lower-level MBMS information and can predict the remaining
battery capacity and health status in real time. Communicate with host and external systems
through CAN or Modbus-TCP/IP.

5. Fire Suppression System
5.1. Introduction of fire protection system

5.1.1. Fire Fighting System

The fire protection system supporting the energy storage battery compartment product must comply
with the relevant fire protection laws and regulations of the country/region where the project is
located.

Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment of the fire protection system to ensure that all
functional indicators are in normal working order.

5.1.2. Fire Extinguishing Design

The fire protection plan of the containerized Energy Storage System adheres to the design concept of
"multi-stage integrated fire prevention and fire protection". The plan consists of the following
progressive stages:

1. Battery pack-level immersion protection

2. Automatic explosion-proof extinguishing pack design
3. Automatic explosive gas ventilation system
4. Automatic gaseous agent fire-extinguishing system
5. Fire sprinkler multiple progressive fire-extinguishing protection system
The system includes early warning device, automatic fire extinguishing device, exhaust device and
fire sprinkler device, etc. The protection strategy of fire safety system includes:

• The battery modules are all set with cell-level temperature monitoring, reporting to BMS
management to enable early warning function.
• When any battery cell has an over-temperature threshold (~80°C), the battery pack-level
immersion extinguishing system starts the liquid injection immersion protection to suppress
the early state of thermal runaway in the battery pack.
• If the hydrogen gas sensor detects off-gassing from battery cells, the automatic ventilation
system will engage, venting fresh air across the container to prevent explosive gases from
accumulating.
• When the thermal runaway in the battery pack cannot be controlled under extreme conditions
and spreads into the container, the gaseous agent fire extinguishing system activates, stopping
the ventilation system, and submerging the entire container with extinguishing gas while
triggering the fire alarm indicator and bells outside the container.
• If the gaseous agent fire extinguishing system is unable to control the fire in the container,
firefighters may also connect fire hose to the hose connector on the outside of the container
wall. The whole container can be continuously sprayed to extinguish the fire within the
container and prevent the fire from spreading outside the container.

6. Thermal Management System
6.1. Battery Pack Thermal Management Design
The battery pack of this product uses Gotion’s second-generation energy storage liquid-cooled
standard pack. The battery pack adopts an integrated die-casting structure of the box body and the
liquid-cooled plate to achieve reliability and dry-wet separation. The design prevents the risk of coolant
leaking into the battery pack, improving the safety and reliability of the battery pack.

The overall structure of a battery pack is shown in Figure 6-1. The liquid-cooling channel is integrated
to the bottom plate of the box, which not only reduces the height of the overall pack, but also ensures
the dry-wet separation between the coolant and the battery cells for system safety.

Figure 6-1: Battery Pack Structure

The internal structure of the battery pack is shown below in Figure 6-2. It includes a case cover, battery
modules, a thermal conductive pad, and a liquid-cooled integrated case. The single pack configuration
is 1P44S, which consists of 44x 300Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The thermal conductive pad
is filled in gaps between the cells and the cold plate to improve the efficiency of heat conduction. In
such way, the role of the liquid cooling system can be fully utilized, the maximum temperature of the
battery cell can be reduced, and the temperature difference of the system can be reduced at the same
time.

Figure 6-2: Battery Pack Exploded View

The flow channel’s schematic structure of the liquid-cooled integrated box is shown in Figure 6-3. After
the coolant enters the flow channel, it is divided into two branches in parallel, and then flows evenly
through the bottom area of all modules with a flow channel height of 3.3mm. This design can not only
reduce the flow resistance and improve the energy efficiency of the cooling unit, but also reduce the
temperature difference in the battery pack.

6.2. Battery Rack Thermal Management Design

A single battery rack consists of 9 battery packs stacked on the shelf from bottom to top, as shown in
Figure 6-4. It consists of a total of 44×9 = 396 battery cells. The liquid cooling pipelines between the 9
battery packs are all connected in parallel. It can maintain the same inlet water temperature among
all the 9 battery packs to reduce the temperature difference within the rack.

The schematic diagram of the piping system in the single rack is shown in Figure 6-5 and Figure 6-6.
The branch circuit connected to the battery pack is a quick-plug connector, and the one connected to
the battery pack is a SAE15.82 quick-plug connector. The outer diameter of the branch circuit is
17mm, and the outer diameter of the main pipe is 31mm. Each layer of parallel battery packs is
connected by a tee tube connector, and the inner diameter of the tee tube is 14mm.

6.3. Container Thermal Management System
The container thermal management system is shown in Figure 6-7. A single container consists of 9
racks (5 racks + 4 racks). Each rack contains 9 standard liquid-cooled chambers, and the container has
a total of 81 battery packs, with a total of 44×9×9=3564 battery cells.

Figure 6-7: Container Cooling Piping System Overview

Figure 6-8: Container Cooling Piping System Top View

The container piping system is shown in Figure 6-8. The liquid cooling system between all the
containers is connected in parallel. The system uses a customized chiller unit with a total flow rate of

320 L/ min, and the flow is equally divided into each battery pack (about 4 L/ min), which can meet the
flow rate demand of the battery pack.

Figure 6-9: Schematic Diagram of Container Piping System

The liquid cooling pipes of each rack of batteries are connected to the main circuit through
VDA/NW26+ quick-plug connectors, as shown in Figure 6-10. Both branch and main pipelines are
made of flexible material for easy installation.

7.3.1. Routine Maintenance

The following maintenance actions should be conducted monthly where possible:

• Ambient temperature: where possible, conduct maintenance activities with ambient temperature
between 20 and 40 °C.
• Long-term idle (disconnected): when the battery system is resting/idling for a long period, the
system shall be charged every 3 months, with SOC reaching more than 80%.
• Regular dusting: clean the system regularly and vacuum where necessary to ensure that the air
can circulate freely within the container. Power must be cut off before dusting. WATER FLUSHING
THE AIR INTAKE/OUTLET IS STRICTLY PROBITED.
• Regularly check the cable connection terminals (not loose), the terminal surface (not severely
rusted or oxidized), and the contact in good condition.
• Regularly check the cables (not aged or damaged), and the insulation is in good condition.
• Regularly check that the indicator lights are intact and functioning properly.

7.3.2. Liquid cooling system O&M

• Check the liquid cooling system at least every 6 months: if liquid leakage occurs inside the
container, please stop operating the system immediately and contact Gotion for maintenance.
• Regularly clean or replace the filter (require the same specification and size as the equipped
factory filter). The cleaning cycle of the filter should depend on the amount of dirt and foreign
matter caused by the installation location and environment.
• If the coolant is selected from brands recommended by Gotion, it shall be examined every five
years. If the coolant degrades to the following levels, coolant replacement is needed.
o pH value < 6.5, or pH value > 9.5
o Chloride ion concentration > 60ppm
o Appearance: the coolant is cloudy and contains impurities
o The liquid level sensor prompts an alarm when liquid needs to be added.
• If third-party coolant supplier is selected, select the coolant with the freezing point lower than
the minimum temperature in the site location. It is recommended that the coolant with a 40%~50%
ethylene glycol concentration and good anti-corrosion performance for aluminum be maintained
in accordance with the requirements of the coolant supplier. Maintenance inspection should be
