M-8100 SAFETY
At Miller Formless, we pride ourselves in building quality machines that are safe to operate. For this
reason, we have taken great care to assure that the following instructions, when followed completely, will
promote the safe operation of your slipformer. Safety was our concern in designing and building this
machine (and its accessories). Now safety must be your concern during operation!

Remember, the following safety warnings, precautions and requirements cannot be effective without good
common sense. There simply is no substitute for intelligent safety practices.

As owner/operator, you must read this entire manual, including and especially all safety precautions,
before operating this machine (and any of its accessories). As owner/operator, you must also make sure
that this entire manual has been read by anyone else who intends to use the machine (and any of its
accessories), before they do so. You must also assume the responsibility that all instructions, warnings, and
precautions are followed.

This machine (and its accessories) cannot be operated in a manner contradictory to the instructions of the
Operational and Parts Manual, any safety warnings and precautions displayed on the machine itself, or
common sense. As owner/operator, you assume responsibility for not only the safety of yourself, but also of
anyone else on or around the machine.

General Safety Concerns for Operators

As operator of the machine, you must assume responsibility for the safety of everyone on or near the
machine and its accessories. It is good practice to assume that you are the only one considering safety as an
important requisite to operating the machine. Concern yourself with the safe actions of yourself, and of
anyone else on or near the machine.

DO NOT remove any warning signs, decals, protective guards, or vandal covers!

DO NOT operate machine if any of the above has been removed or damaged, until replaced or repaired.

DO NOT allow signs or decals to become covered or dirty! They must remain easily seen and legible at all
times.

DO NOT perform any maintenance while machine is running! Remove the ignition key before cleaning,
adjusting, or performing any maintenance! This way you can be sure no one else will start the machine
while you are working on it.

DO NOT attempt any maintenance or repairs you are not qualified to perform.

DO NOT approach moving components, such as the auger or tracks, while the machine is running!
KEEP HANDS AND FEET AWAY! NEVER clean, adjust, or perform maintenance on these parts
without first removing the ignition key!

DO NOT wear loose or dangling clothing, such as long unbuttoned cuffs, scarves, or ripped and torn gloves,
jackets, shirts, pants, etc.

DO NOT run near or jump onto or off of the machine and its accessories. Always walk and use steps, hand
rails and handles designed for safe boarding of the machine. NEVER board the machine except at specified
locations.

M-8100 SAFETY
NEVER allow passengers on the machine during operation. NEVER allow unauthorized personnel on the

Safety Precautions
equipment.

DO NOT allow anyone on or near machine without first making sure they know and understand all safety
precautions, as well as potential consequences should these precautions be disregarded.

As owner/operator, you must insure safety for anyone on or near this machine (and its accessories).

NEVER place hands or feet on any section of the steering arms!

NEVER leave loose objects anywhere on the machine, especially near moving parts (such as auger or tracks).

NEVER leave objects on or hanging from steps, rails, guards, or handles.

ALWAYS secure loose objects in a safe place away from moving parts. ALWAYS store tools in the built-in
tool box located at the back end of the machine.

NEVER start machine indoors without proper ventilation.

NEVER leave the machine unattended while running.

NEVER remove radiator cap, drain plugs, grease fittings, or pressure taps while components are still hot.
Use caution when removing any of these, even when machine is cool.

NEVER refuel machine when the engine is hot or running.

NEVER smoke, cause sparks or ignite anything when refueling, using starting fluid, servicing the fuel
system, or checking the battery.

NEVER walk between ready mix truck and the machine while either is running, or while unloading concrete.

DO NOT operate this machine (or its accessories) if there is any portion of the Operational and Parts Manual
which you do not fully understand.

ALWAYS check under and around machine for any objects or obstructions (before starting).

ALWAYS make sure all controls are in neutral before starting.

ALWAYS wear necessary safety equipment, such as head, eye and hearing protection.

ALWAYS know and use hand signals in lieu of yelling. The combination of noise from the machine and
other equipment, combined with proper use of ear plugs, will make it difficult to hear instructions. Make sure
everyone on or near the machine knows all signals. Also, make it clear who has the responsibility to signal
and when.

ALWAYS use a flagman when crossing a street or highway, or any time that traffic must be obstructed.

ALWAYS secure loose objects, covers, guards, fluid caps and plugs (radiator, oil, fuel, water tank, etc.)
before starting machine.

M-8100 Multi-Purpose Slipformer

SAFETY - 3
M-8100 SAFETY
ALWAYS check and maintain proper oil, fuel, water and coolant levels. Hydraulic components may become
extremely hot during operation. ALWAYS use caution and wear thick gloves when working on handling
pumps, motors, hoses, tanks, filters, etc. Be Careful removing hydraulic oil tank cap! Relieve pressure by
slowly turning cap to first stop before removing. Be careful removing radiator pressure cap when the radiator
is hot! To avoid scalding, turn cap to first stop position before removing.

ALWAYS Check gauges and instruments often during operation.

ALWAYS report and correct any damage or defect in the machine before operating.

ALWAYS be cautious of unusual noises or “feel” to the machine during operation. Stop the machine
immediately if you suspect a safety or operation problem.

ALWAYS stop the machine if you are unsure about anything that may cause an unsafe condition or damage
to the machine (and its accessories).

ALWAYS lock the elevation before getting off machine.

ALWAYS lower working tool to ground when unattended or at the end of the day.

ALWAYS clean machine thoroughly when finished for day, or when necessary to maintain safe operation.
Be careful of slippery surfaces when washing up machine and other equipment.

ALWAYS chain machine down securely when trailering.

ALWAYS block tracks when parking on a steep grade to keep from free-wheeling.

ALWAYS lock security and vandal covers before leaving the job site.

REMEMBER, there is no substitute for common sense and safe working practices.

M-8100 SAFETY
The Auger Winch

Safety Precautions
The danger spots on the Auger have been previously explained. But there is more to this system. The Auger
raises into travelling mode with the use of a Winch. Keep hands, feet and objects away from the Winch
Cable. Do not wear loose clothing near the Auger Winch. Never hang clothing or any other objects on any
part of the Winch, or any part of the Auger system.

Molds
Molds can be raised and lowered, creating Pinch Points and other possible hazards. Never stand on the Mold,
or between the machine and the Mold. Never place feet under any portion of the Mold. Also, never leave
tools or any other loose objects on or around the Mold. There are many Pinch Points on any mold, especially
those with hydraulically adjustable parts. Never work on a Mold while the machine is running. Always
remove the keys while servicing. Never loosen Mold Mounts while the Mold is raised off the ground.

The Trim and Pour (Trimmer) Option

Some slipformers can Trim & Pour simultaneously. These particular models are equipped with their own
Trimmer/Subgrader. The Trimmer has several Teeth that turn on an Auger to set the grade that the machine
will pour on. The Teeth are all contained inside the Trimmer’s main body, but the Auger extends outside the
body to move the material ground by the Trimmer Teeth. The Teeth are extremely dangerous because the
Cutter Head and Auger are very powerful. Keep feet, hands and objects away from the entire system. Be
extremely careful around the exposed section of the Auger. When operating the Trimmer, be sure the the path
it will follow is clear of anything that could become lodged in the Auger, Cutter Head, and Teeth. Objects
caught could break or shatter, and potentially damage the Trimmer. Never work on the Trimmer while the
machine is running. Always remove the ignition key first. On chain-drive Trimmers, never remove the
Subgrader Chain Guard, except when servicing (with the ignition key removed). Always replace the Chain
Guard before starting the machine again.

M-8100 SAFETY - MACHINE DECALS
Miller Formless Safety Decals
For safety reasons, it is important that machine decals always remain legible. They convey vital safety
information pertaining to hazardous areas on the machine. It is equally important that anyone working on or
near the machine understands each safety decal. For this reason, we have compiled the following information
describing all Miller Formless machine decals, their locations on the M-8100, and how to apply replacement
decals.
All safety labels on Miller Formless equipment have been carefully placed so they can be easily seen at
all times. They are bright yellow in color, and can help avoid serious injury. There are five different types of
safety decals on Miller Formless machines, as well as two Miller Formless logos, a company name/address
decal, and one model description (M-1000, M-8100, M-8800, or M-9000). Each decal is explained, and its
location(s) shown in this section.
Always keep the safety decals free of concrete or anything that restricts visibility. Never remove the
decals. Over time, decals may become worn or permanently covered. Owners may choose to repaint
their machines as well. In all cases, the machine decals must be replaced! This can easily be done by
ordering through our Parts Department at 800-435-6150.
The following are brief descriptions of what each safety label means. The locations of safety labels on
the M-8100 are listed and shown as well.

1. WARNING
READ OPERATING MANUAL THOROUGHLY BEFORE OPERATING
THIS EQUIPMENT. HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION SUGGESTED.
NEVER LEAVE RUNNING MACHINE UNATTENDED. DONOT LEAVE
MACHINE FULLY ELEVATED.

Location: This safety decal is located on the inside of the Control Cabinet, so that it will be seen by anyone
who starts the machine.

Miller Formless designs machines to run as quietly as possible. But we cannot eliminate all machine
noise, nor that which comes from other sources on the job. We strongly recommend using adequate
hearing protection on all
job sites. Hearing damage is 9. 7. 1.
permanent, so you don’t
want to take chances. And
we urge you to develop and
use a pre-determined set of
hand signals for all tasks
performed. Good
communication is essential
on construction sites, and
hand signals are often the
only solution.
We also recommend
using eye protection.
Construction sites are
unpredictable. And eyesight
is the most important sense
we use on them. Wind can
blow debris into the eyes at
any time, and splashing
concrete can burn. As owner 06-81M-A

M-8100 SAFETY - MACHINE DECALS
of the machine, please require all workers to wear eye protection, especially the operator, and anyone working
on or around the machine. This will make it easier to focus on the task at hand, and help prevent serious

Machine Decals
injuries.
The operator should never leave the operator’s platform while the machine is running. Always stop
the engine and remove the key from the ignition before working on the machine. Also remove the key any
time the machine will be left unattended, even for just a short time.
Do not leave the machine fully elevated. This puts added wear on the seals and hydraulics in general.
When left elevated, the machine will eventually descend. This could create a dangerous situation after the
crew has left for the day.

2. WARNING
KEEP AUGER AND CHAIN GUARDS IN PLACE.

3. WARNING
KEEP HANDS, FEET, AND TOOLS CLEAR OF ROTATING AUGER SCREW.

Location: These two safety decals are found in various places on the Auger Shell. They both apply to the
Auger System of transferring concrete to the machine.

Never remove the Auger and Chain Guards! Never operate the machine when the Auger Guard is
open. Keep hands, feet, and all tools and objects away from the Auger. Never remove or alter the
railing separating the Auger System from the Operator’s Platform! The Auger Screw rotates as it
remixes and elevates concrete to the hopper. Very serious injury can result if hands, feet, or any object gets
caught between the Auger Screw and the Auger Shell. Serious injury can also result if hands, feet, or objects
become caught in the Auger Chain.

feet, hands, and all objects away from
each Track and its full radius of travel.
Remember, the machine’s entire weight is
carried on the Tracks. Never take chances
around them. When boarding, signal the
operator to stop the machine. Then do so.
Never step on the Tracks! If you drop a
tool or any other object under the machine
or near the tracks, stop the machine
immediately; then retrieve the object.
Remember, anything that becomes lodged
in the Tracks can cause serious injury,
especially if it breaks or shatters. Be sure
all loose objects are secure, or store them in
the machine’s tool box. Remember, the
Tracks turn hydraulically, so keep feet
away from the sides of them as well. 4. 5. 5. 4.

M-8100 SAFETY - MACHINE DECALS
5. WARNING
PINCH POINT! KEEP FEET AND HANDS CLEAR!

Machine Decals
Location: These safety decals are found on the Steering Arms and Walking Beams. Remember! There
may be other Pinch Points in addition to those labeled! Please, be cautious and use common sense.

Pinch Points are found in a number of places around the machine. A Pinch Point is any place on the
machine where at least one part of the machine moves closer to another, between which a part of the
body or object can become caught or lodged. You must know where all Pinch Points are on the machine
before operating. The same goes for any persons on or near the machine. In addition, they must know all
other safety information explained in this section. The Steering Arm Pinch Points are marked with the
Warning Decal shown here. Remember, an object that becomes lodged in a Pinch Point can cause serious
injury, especially if it breaks or shatters. Once again, be sure all loose objects are secure, or store them in the
machine’s tool box.
The Steering Arm Pinch Points can be very dangerous. They open and close in scissor-like fashion when
the machine is elevated and lowered. Never put hands or feet on any part of the steering arms.
When the machine is completely lowered, Pinch Points are also found where the Elevation Tubes meet
the Track Saddles. Keep hands, feet and all objects away from these areas as well.
In addition, Pinch Points are found where there is a gap between the Double Elevation Tube Saddle and
the Walking Beam. When the machine is raised or lowered at different angles, the gap narrows and widens.
Never stand, sit or place any obect or part of the body anywhere on the many Track Pinch Points.
Please be aware that Pinch Points are found on and around all hydraulic cylinders on the machine and
mold, between all covers and guards, and anywhere else that moving parts are found.

M-8100 SAFETY - MACHINE DECALS
Applying Machine Decals -- Dry Method

Machine Decals
Before applying M-8100 decals, be sure that the painted surfaces are clean and free from debris. If the
machine has been repainted, be sure that the paint is completely dry. The previous pages describe each decal
in detail, including its location on the machine.
When applying decals, be very careful. Once the decal comes in contact with the painted surface, it
usually will not come off without tearing. When applying the Miller Formless machine decals (#6, #7, #8,
and #9 in the Decal descriptions on previous pages), peel off half of the backing only. Position the decal in
the desired position, and begin to apply, being careful to eliminate air bubbles. Use a hard straight plasting
edge to force out air bubbles, and to make the decal more permanent. Any remaining bubbles can be popped,
and then smoothed out with the plastic straight edge. Hint: When applying the wide “Miller Formless Co.
Inc.” (#6) and Company Name/Address (#8) decals, the protective covering should be removed after the decal
has been applied. The safety “Warning” decals can simply be removed and applied in the proper position.
Note: It is important that the safety decals are applied exactly as described herein.

Applying Machine Decals -- Wet Method

Another way to apply decals makes the process much easier. However, it does require time to dry.
Drying time varies depending on conditions. Also, this method is not recommended for application of the
wide “Miller Formless Co., Inc.” (#6) decal, or the Company Name/Address (#8) decal, because removing the
protective covering can pull the decal up again after it has been applied.
Again, be sure the painted surfaces are clean and free from debris. If the machine has been repainted, be
sure that the paint is completely dry. The previous pages describe each decal in detail, including its location
on the machine.
This method requires use of a spray bottle filled with soapy water. First spray the area where the decal is
to be applied. Next, peel off the entire decal backing. Spray the adhesive side of the decal with soapy water.
Place the decal in the desired position, and squeegee the soapy water out by dragging the plastic straight edge
over the decal. The decal should move around, making centering and straightening easier. When the decal is
positioned properly, carefully wipe away excess moisture. Do not press hard when wiping, because the decal
may still move. Allow the decals to dry before using or cleaning the machine, exposing to the elements, etc.

As manufacturer, Miller Formless cannot be held responsible for injury or damage resulting
from any deviation from the expressed methods of safety and operation as described herein, or as
displayed on the equipment itself.

Failure to adhere to the instructions of the Operational and Parts Manual, and any other
safety warnings/precautions displayed on the equipment itself, relieves the manufacturer of any
and all liability for warranties, property damage, personal injury or death. The manufacturer also
disclaims all remedies for any such claims resulting.
