1. Objective
The desired outcome of the procedure is to list down the existing gas
turbine protections and the control devices through which protections are
monitored and detail the logic of tripping.

3. Gas Turbine Protection

The gas turbine protection systems are comprised of a number of systems,
several of which operate at each normal startup and shutdown whereas the
other systems and components function strictly for emergency and abnormal
operating conditions during load condition.

Protection systems are provided to prevent abnormal conditions which could

result in damage to the turbine. The critical operating parameters monitored
by the protection system are: temperature, speed, vibration, flame, and
compressor operating limit. Over temperature and over speed systems are
provided as independent backup systems for the temperature control and
speed control systems. Vibration detection and protection is activated by
abnormal turbine vibration amplitude reaching a preset level. The flame
detection and protection system is activated if flame is not established during
startup or if flame is lost during operation. Each system operates
independently and will trip the unit if its signal corresponds to a trip condition.

Protective systems and their components operate through the master control
and protection circuit in the SPEEDTRONIC system. The SPEEDTRONIC system
is a microprocessor based control system which provides the analog and
digital signals required to control and protect the operation of the gas turbine.
Operating conditions of the turbine are sensed and utilized as feedback
signals to SPEEDTRONIC control system.

The most common kind of failure on a gas turbine is the failure of a sensor or
of the wiring to it. The protection systems are set up to detect and alarm such
a failure. If the condition is serious enough to disable the protection
completely, the turbine will be tripped.

Master Protective signal (L4) is the signal that monitors all the protections of
the gas turbine and gives the trip command to the gas turbine through the
trip solenoids which drain the Trip Oil circuit.

Master Protective Signal (L4) is commanded by Master Protective Trip (L4T) or

Fired Shutdown (L94T).
Master Protective Trip (L4T) monitors Pre Ignition Trip (L4PRET), Post Ignition
Trip (L4POST), Protective Status Trip (L4PST), Starting Device Trip (L3SMT),
and Inlet Guide Vane Control Trouble Trip (L4IGVT).
Fired Shutdown (L94T) monitors the abnormal conditions during operation by
Normal shutdown (L94X), which is commanded by STOP command (L1STOP),
Automatic Shutdown (L94AX).
