FORMULATING EVALUATIVE
STATEMENT: ASSERTION

MODULE 6.1
OBJECTIVE:
1. Make inference from a read text;

2. Determine the four types of Assertions;

3. Recognize the importance of using


proper assertions to make arguments or
statements more appealing through
watching a short video clip; and

4. Identify what type of assertions are in


the given statements.
Last meeting, we discussed about
Making Inference as part of the
Five Goals of Critical Reading. We
learned that inference is an
intelligent guess that a reader
makes by combining details from
a text and his/her personal
knowledge.
Now, let us try to apply
what we learned by reading
this short paragraph and
answering inferential
questions.
When Aleng Tinay saw Pablo walk into her
clothing and variety store, she greeted
him by his name. Aleng Tinay led Pablo to
one of the clothesline where a Spider man
shirt is hanging. She right away hand the
shirt to Pablo to show the quality of the
product. Pablo, who had come only to buy
a pair of spider man socks, started
nodding his head along with her. “Not
bad,” he said. Then he brought out his
wallet.

One big part of this holiday season is the
gift giving. In the last few weeks, teachers
had started our Monito and Monita. We had
something slimy and something long last
weeks. This week, we will have something
rough. It is really exciting to receive gifts,
right?

Suppose your parents give you an option of


the gift you want to receive on Christmas
day or as a year end present. This is for you
to be motivated to study harder for next
year. These are your options.
A. 10, 000 pesos

B. 10,000 worth of new


cellphone

C. 10,000 worth of school


supplies
Which one will you choose
and why?

If you were your parents,


what do you think would
they tell you after knowing
your choice?
For sure you have your own bases and
considerations for your own choice. In
the situation above, you may have
evaluated each option for you to come up
with the best one. At the same time, you
may have considered your needs and
interests as well as the usefulness and the
value of each offer.

The same rule applies when you


evaluate any reading text. You also need to
consider your bases as evidence in order to
validate or verify your assertions or claim
about what you read.
For the second question, your
parents may have given you
evaluative statements that
express their assessment about
the choice you made.

Now, the question is what is an


evaluative statement?
EVALUATIVE STATEMENT
It is a statement that states one's
sound judgement about something
through writing which is supported
by reasons and evidences. It also
presents the strengths and
weaknesses of something based
on a set of criteria which needs to
be factual, substantial, and
unbiased.
In layman's term, an
evaluative statement is a way
of presenting your final
judgment on an idea or issue,
whether it be positive or
negatives, right or wrong,
moral or immoral, supported
by research or valid reasons.
Before we can formulate a
substantial evaluative
statement, it is essential to
first determine one
important element in stating
an evaluation. It is called
Assertions.
An Assertion is a statement used to
make a declaration or to express
strong belief on a particular topic.

This is done after reading a text or


maybe after watching a movie. The
purpose of writing an assertion is
to convince the readers to accept
the writer’s interpretation and
evaluative statements on a
particular literary work.
In short, assertions are
declarative sentences that
give one’s belief about
something else as if it is true
though it may not be. It is
expressed as an argument.
Four Types of
Assertions based
on the Degree of
Certainty
STATEMENT OF FACT - is a
statement that can be proven
objectively by direct experience,
testimonies of witnesses, verified
observations, or the results of
research.

• The Great Wall of China is the


longest wall in the world.
• The capital of the Philippines is
Manila.
STATEMENT OF OPINION - is a statement
based on facts but is difficult to
objectively verify because of the
uncertainty of producing satisfactory
proofs of soundness. Opinions result from
ambiguities; the more ambiguous a
statement, the more difficult it is to verify.
Thus, they are open to disputes.

• Basketball is more exciting than


volleyball.
• Black Pink is the best Korean girl band.
STATEMENT OF CONVENTION - is a way in which
something is done similar to traditions and
norms. Its truthfulness can be verified only by
reference to historical precedents, laws, rules,
usage, and customs. Something to note about
conventions is that they may sound factual due
to their being derived from customs, but
because they are socially accepted ways of
doing things, they cannot be verified objectively
by measurements.

• It is customary to shake hands when greeting


someone in many cultures.
• Class hours starts from 7am to 3pm in most
countries.
STATEMENT OF PREFERENCE - states
a personal choice in which the writer is
under no obligation to support or
prove the truthfulness of the
statement. They are subjective and
cannot be objectively proven or
logically attacked.

• I would rather stay home and play


mobile games than going to SM.
• I prefer watching horror movies than
drama.
To conclude our class
discussion today, I have
here a video
presentation entitled
the Power of Words.

What can you say about
what happened when
the lady change what
was written on the
carton?
We can consider the people who passed by
as critical readers. As they walk past the
man, they evaluate what is written on the
carton before doing anything. As you can
see, the blind man wasn’t able to get that
much alms with the original writing on the
carton, but things have changed when the
lady rewrote his statement. From the
factual statement, “I am blind please
help,” it became a statement of opinion
with a touching factual ending, “It is a
beautiful day and I can’t see it.” From
there, he received more money.
We can see in here the power of
word choices in constructing an
argument. A writer should be very
careful on which statement to use in
order to make it more
understandable or appealing not
only to common readers but also to
the critic or evaluators.
Let us apply what we have
learned. Suppose that we are
going to attend a wedding.
