1. World Wide Web (WWW)

• Definition: The World Wide Web (WWW or simply the web) is a system of
interlinked hypertext documents and multimedia content that can be accessed
over the internet.

• Components:

o Web Pages: Documents written in HTML (HyperText Markup


Language), viewed using web browsers.

o Hyperlinks: Clickable links that connect different web pages, enabling


easy navigation.

• Function: The web allows users to browse and retrieve information, ranging
from text to multimedia. It is accessed via web browsers such as Google
Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.

2. Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

• Definition: A URL is a web address used to identify and access a specific


resource on the internet.

• Structure of a URL:

o Protocol: http:// or https:// specifies the rules for data exchange (e.g.,
HTTPS for secure communication).

o Domain Name: Represents the address of the server, such as


www.example.com.

o Path: Points to the specific file or page on the server, such as


/about.html.

• Example: https://www.example.com/index.html identifies a specific page on


a website called "example.com".
3. Electronic Mail (Email)

• Definition: Email is a service for sending and receiving messages electronically


across the internet.

• Components:

o Email Address: A unique identifier consisting of a username and


domain (e.g., user@example.com).

o Email Client: A software or application used to manage emails, such as


Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, or Yahoo Mail.

o Attachments: Files that can be added to emails, like documents or


images.

• Function: Email allows for the exchange of messages, often including text,
attachments, and hyperlinks, across different devices and locations. It supports
both personal and professional communication.

4. Search Engines

• Definition: Search engines are tools that allow users to search for information
on the internet using keywords.

• Examples: Google, Bing, Yahoo.

• Functionality:

o Indexing: Search engines crawl and index web pages from across the
web.

o Query Processing: When users type in a search query, the search engine
finds the most relevant results from its index.

o Ranking: Results are ranked based on relevance, determined using


algorithms that consider factors like keywords and page authority.

• Importance: Search engines help users find specific information quickly,


including articles, images, and videos.
5. Chatting and Instant Messaging

• Definition: Chatting and instant messaging (IM) refer to real-time text-based


communication over the internet.

• Features:

o Real-time Communication: Users can instantly send and receive


messages, which is useful for both social and professional interactions.

o Group Chats: IM services often allow multiple participants to join a


conversation.

o Media Sharing: Users can share images, audio, and files.

• Examples: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram.

• Importance: Chatting and IM provide instant communication and are an


integral part of personal and work-related activities.

6. Video Conferencing

• Definition: Video conferencing involves real-time communication using both


audio and video, allowing users to see and talk to each other over the internet.

• Requirements:

o Devices: A computer or mobile device with a camera and microphone.

o Internet Connection: A stable connection for smooth audio and video


transmission.

• Features:

o Screen Sharing: Participants can share their screens to present


documents, slides, or demonstrations.

o Recording: Some platforms offer the ability to record meetings for later
reference.
o Chat: Many video conferencing platforms also include chat for sharing
links and text during meetings.

• Examples: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet.

• Applications: Video conferencing is commonly used for remote work, virtual


meetings, online classes, and personal communication.
