Reflection in Philo
Reflection in Philo
As a child, I have always thought that people with disabilities are scary because they are
built differently but I never make fun of them or laugh at them. Growing up I understood why
they are different from most of us and how cruel they might think the world is to them. I
always wonder how they can smile and continue with their life despite the difficulties and
challenges they are facing everyday. Having a chance to interview and interact with a person
with a disability helps me understand them more and reflect on myself.
Ate JC Parumog is 27 years old with an invisible disability which is being paralyzed when
she’s tired and she needs to take medicine every four hours to look fine in people’s eyes or
perspectives. She got it when she was 17 and still suffered until now for more than 10 years.
She was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis which is a rare disease and was suffering 2
years before she was diagnosed. She said that her family was crying when they found out
about her disease and eventually her disability became her strength and it became a
convenience for her because she is being prioritized. Maybe people might not see her
disability, because she is used to it and already knows how to handle it because she was
suffering for many years now, but she is fighting her own battle. The hardest part of being
disabled is there are people around you or you’ll meet people that will make fun of you and
tease you about your disability. However, ate JC turned her weakness into her strength.
Even though there are things that they cannot have she realized that it could be her strength
and we just need to strive harder so things will be great and we can do great in life. She
always chose to be positive in life and value only the good things that happened to her.
Knowing what she experienced and is experiencing everyday, I have realized how strong
and admirable people with disabilities are and how they are not that different from most of
us. That is what everyone should learn, that they are also people who have feelings and
emotions. In fact a lot of disabled people are more talented and courageous than us. We
should not focus solely on their disabilities but also on their uniqueness. Don’t think of them
less just because they are different from what we think is normal. Rather than fearing and
laughing at them we should talk to them casually and befriend them. This is a new
generation, let’s stop the stereotypes about them and start to change others' views about
people with disabilities. To those people with disabilities, I want you to believe in yourself
more, be positive, and ignore those people who are making fun of you. It might be hard and
where you’re coming from is valid but we should remember that we have a choice to shine
and prove to them that even though you are disabled you can also do the things they can do,
you just need to muster up the courage and turn those weaknesses into your strengths.
