9. A car has a fuel consumption rating of 8.3 L/100 km.

a) Calculate the fuel consumption rating in gallons per mile,
to three decimal places. (3 marks)
Answer:
First, liter is converted to gallon:
3.785 L=¿ 1 gal
8.3
So , 8.3 L= gal=2.19 gal
3.785

Now, kilometer is converted to mile:

1.609 km=1 mi

100
So, 100km = mi = 62.15 mi
1.609

So, Car consumption rate is 2.19gal / 62.15 mi = 0.035 gal per mile

b) How many gallons are used when the car is driven 1 mi? (1
mark)

Answer: 0.035 gallons are used when the car is driven 1 mi.

b) What dimensions would you use to minimize the costs of
making the box? Explain. (2 marks)
Answer:
I use the following dimensions to reduce the cost of the box.
Length = 3, Width = 4, Height = 2
Or
Length = 4, Width = 3, Height = 2

I am using these dimensions because in these dimensions I am getting

less surface area. And if the surface area is less than we will use less
materials to make box. And because we are using less materials, we can
save money on materials.

Obtuse angle means angle that measure greater than 90 ° and less than
180° . Which means between 90 degrees to 180 degrees is
called obtuse angle.

b) Oblique Triangle
Answer:
An oblique triangle does not have a right angle. In other words, all three
angles in an oblique triangle are less than 90 degrees which means acute
angle.

c) Angle of Elevation
Answer:
The angle of elevation is the angle created between a line of sight (such as
one from an observer's eye) and a horizontal plane (usually the base level).
It is measured vertically up from the horizontal plane.

14. What is the effect on the perimeter of a rectangle

if the dimensions of the rectangle are doubled? What
is the effect on the area if the dimensions are
doubled? (3 marks)
Answer:
The Perimeter(P) and Area(A) of rectangle are given by below formula:
P=2L+2W
A=L×W
If the dimension is doubled, the new dimension becomes 2L and 2W. Let’s
check the effect on perimeter and area.

Effect on perimeter:
New perimeter = 2(2L) + 2(2W) = 4L + 4W = 2 (2L+2W) = 2 P
So, double of the dimensions of a rectangle resulting in double of its perimeter.

Effect on Area:
New Area: 2L× 2W = 4 (L×W) = 4 A
So, doubling of the dimensions of rectangle resulting in quadrupling of its area.

15. List six possible sets of dimensions for a

rectangular prism with a volume of 36 m3. (3 marks)

Task 4: Thinking (25 marks)

Show all work for each question.

18. The first floor of a house is shaped like a

rectangular prism and the second floor is shaped like
a triangular prism. The dimensions are shown on the
following diagram. If a 1000 BTU air conditioner can
cool a house with a volume of air up to 1000 m3, can
this air conditioner cool the house sufficiently? (5
marks)

Answer:

I will calculate the volumes of the first floor's rectangle prism and the second floor's
triangle prism, then total them to find the overall volume of the home.

1. Rectangular Prism (First floor):

V 1=l × w ×h
V 1=14 m× 8 m× 4 m
3
V 1=448 m

2. Triangular Prism (Second floor):

1
V 2= l ×w × h
2
1
V 2= 14 m×8 m × 4 m
2

Learning
3
V 2=224 m

3. Total volume (V) = V1 + V2

3 3
¿ 448 m +224 m
= 672 m 3

Now, comparing V to the air conditioner's capacity of 1000 m³, we can see that 672 m 3
is less than 1000 m³. Therefore, the 1000 BTU air conditioner should be sufficient to
cool the house.

19. A furnace manufacturer wants to know how much

of the metal surface area is giving off heat in this
design. The metal box is cube-shaped (all sides equal)
with sides measuring 40 in. The circular metal vent is
30 in tall with a diameter of 8 in. Calculate the surface
area
giving off heat, excluding the cube’s base and the
bottom and top of the vent tube. (Hint: You must also
subtract the area of the circle where the vent connects
to the cube.) (5 marks)

Answer:
To calculate the surface area giving off heat, excluding the cube's base and the
bottom and top of the vent tube, I need to find the surface area of the cube
and subtract the areas that are not giving off heat.

B. Surface Area of the Circular Vent:

The surface area ( A vent )of the cylindrical vent tube can be divided into three
parts: the lateral surface area, top and bottom circle area.

 Lateral surface area( Ala )= 2 πr h

¿

 Total vent area( A vent ) = ( Ala ) + 2 ¿

= 240 π ¿2+ 2× 16 π ¿ 2=272 π ¿2

C. Subtracting Unwanted Areas:

To find the surface area giving off heat, I subtract the areas of the cube’s
base and circle where the vent connects to the cube:

( A ) = ( A cube ) -¿ + ( A vent ¿
=
2 2 2 2
9600 ¿ −16 π ¿ +272 π ¿ =9600−( 16 ×3.14 ) +(272 ×3.14 )=10403.84 ≅ 10404 ¿

Now, this expression represents the surface area of the metal giving off heat,
excluding the cube's base and the bottom and top of the vent tube.

20. You are planning to start a home business. You

decide to build a workroom in the shape of a
rectangular prism in the backyard. It will give you
solitude to work and a place for customers to see your
products without disturbing your family in the house.
You price the mate rials needed and decide that the
perimeter of the floor can be 64 ft in total. Maximizing
the floor area inside the workshop is your only
objective. What dimensions would you choose for the
floor, rounded to the nearest whole numbers? You may
know the answer already but provide a fully
documented algebraic solution. (5 marks)

Answer:
To maximize the floor area inside the rectangular prism (workroom) while
keeping the floor's perimeter at 64 ft, I need to express the area in terms of one
variable, differentiate concerning that variable, and find the critical points.

The perimeter(P) = 2 L+ 2W
64 = 2 L+ 2W
I can solve L=32−W

Now, area of rectangular prism( A ) =L× W

( A ) =( 32−W ) ×W =32 W −W 2
To maximize A, take the derivative of A concerning W, set it equal to zero,
and solve for W:
dA
=32−2 w
dW
Now, set 32−2 w=0 and solve for w :
2 w=32
32
w= =16 ft
2
Now, I can find length(L) = 32−W =32−16=16 ft
So, the dimensions that would maximize the floor area inside the workshop
are L=16 ft and W=16 ft, rounded to the nearest whole numbers.

cover a specific angle--an angle of up to 180º. The

camera will be mounted 30 ft from the door and 20 ft
from the cash register. If the door is 15 ft from the cash
register, what angle must the camera cover to watch
both sites? Include a diagram. (5 marks)
Answer:

I find angle of camera(C) by use law of cosine formula:

2 2 2
c =a + b −2 abcos (C)

Here, c = distance between cash register and door, a and b = the distance
from the camera to door and cash register respectively.

2 2 2
(15) =(30) +(20) −2(30)(20)cos(C )
225=900+ 400−1200 cos ⁡(C)

cos (C )=
−1200
cos (C )=¿ 0.89584
−1
C=cos (0.89584)

So, the camera must cover an angle of approximately 26 ° to watch both the
door and the cash register. Now, let's make a simple diagram:
