PROBLEM EXERCISE NO.

16

A double Overhung Pelton wheel unit is to operate at 12.000 kW generator. Find the power
developed by each runner if the generator is 95%.

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO.17

A Kaplan runner develops / 9000 kW under a head of 5.5m. Assume a speed ratio of 2.08, flow
ratio of 0.68, and mechanical efficiency of 85%. The hub diameter is 1/3 the diameter of runner.
Find the diameter of the runner, and its speed and specific speed.

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 18

A 35 MW generator is to operate by a double overhung. Pelton wheel. The effective head is

350m at the base of the nozzle. Find the size of jet, mean diameter of the runner and specific
speed of wheel. Assume Pelton wheel efficiency 84%. velocity coefficient of nozzle 0.96. jet
ratio 12, and speed ratio of 0.45.

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 19

A hydro-electric impulse turbine coupled to a 24 pole 60 Hz alternator. It has a specific speed of

60 rpm and develops 3000 Hp. What is the required diameter assuming a peripheral speed ratio
of 0.45?

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 20

What is the specific speed of turbine in a hydro-electric plant if the net head is 40 ft, brake
power 3MW and running at 5.00 rpm?

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 21

A Pelton wheel in a hydroelectric plant has an output of 17600 BHP at 300 rpm under a head of
510m with 29 m3/s flow. Calculate its critical speed.

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 22

A hydro-electric plant discharge water at the rate of 0.75 m3/s and enters the turbine at 0.35
mps with a pressure of 275 kPa. Runner inside diameter 16 550 mm, speed is 520 rpm and the
turbine efficiency is 88%. Determine the turbine speed factor.

PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 23

The turbine installed at a certain power house develops 34,000 HP. Under a head of 30ft. If the
speed of the turbine 170 rpm, what type of turbine is it?
PROBLEM EXERCISE NO. 24

A hydro-electric installation is to develop 12,200 HP. The head is 8ft and the speed of rotation is
150 rpm. The specific speed of the turbine is not to exceed 485. What is the minimum number
of units required?
