Each question has an internal choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each.

29. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

The branch of chemistry that deals with the study of reaction rates and their
mechanisms is called chemical kinetics. The rate law for a chemical reaction
relates the reaction rate with the concentrations or partial pressures of the
reactants. For a general reaction aA + bB C with no intermediate
steps in its reaction mechanism, meaning that it is an elementary reaction,
the rate law is given by r = k [A]x[B]y , where [A] and [B] express the
concentrations of A and B in moles per litre. Exponents ‘x’ and ‘y’ vary for each
reaction and are determined experimentally. The value of ‘k’ varies with
conditions that affect reaction rate, such as temperature, pressure, surface area…

The sum of these exponents is known as overall reaction order. A zero order
reaction has a rate constant that is independent of the concentration of the
reactants. A first order reaction depends on the concentration of only one
reactant. A reaction is said to be second order when the overall order is two. Once
we have determined the order of the reaction, we can go back and plug in one set
of our initial values and solve for k.

a). Calculate the overall order of the reaction which has the following rate
expression: Rate = K[A]1/2[B]3/2
b). What is meant by rate of a reaction ?
c). A first order reaction takes 77.7 min. for 50% completion. Calculate the time
required for 30% completion of this reaction[log 10 = 1; log 7 = 0.8451]
OR

c). A first order reaction has a rate constant 1x10-3 per second. How long will
5g of this reactant take to reduce to 3g .[log 3 = 0.4771; log 5 = 0.6990]

30. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Amines are regarded as derivatives of ammonia in which hydrogen atoms are

successively replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Amines are classified as primary,
secondary and tertiary amines. Primary amines cannot be obtained by ammonolysis of
alkyl halide because we will get mixture of 1 o, 2o and 3o amines. Cyanides on reduction
give primary amines whereas isocyanides on reduction give secondary amines. Nitro
compounds on reduction also give primary amines. Primary amines react with CHCl 3
and KOH to form foul smelling isocyanide. They react with Hinsberg reagent to form
soluble salt in KOH or NaOH. Secondary amines react with Hinsberg reagent to form a
compound which is insoluble in KOH. Tertiary amines do not react with Hinsberg
reagent.

Diazonium salts are prepared by reaction of Amines with NaNO2 and conc. HCl
at 0 to 5oC. Aromatic diazonium salts are more stable because phenyl diazonium ion
is stabilized by resonance. Benzene diazonium chloride can be used to prepare halo
benzene, phenol, nitro benzene, benzene, p-hydroxy azo benzene (azo dye) and large
number useful compounds.
