5.7 Complex Fractions


Complex fraction: a fraction that has one or more fractions in the numerator or denominator (or both)
or powers with negative exponents.

There are multiple methods for simplifying complex fractions.

Method 1: Combine all fractions in Method 2: Multiply numerator & denominator by


numerator & denominator until you LCD, then distribute and reduce.
have a single fraction over a single fraction.
Then, collapse the fraction.
 Numerator times reciprocal of denominator
(or outsides over insides)

PROCESS for simplifying:


 Rewrite w/o negative exponents
 Figure out LCD
 Multiply numerator & denominator by LCD
 Simplify (which might include factoring & reducing)
 Remember to include any lost domain restrictions
