Valve timing diagram of SI Engine

Name of the Experiment:

Valve timing diagram of SI Engine.

Sketch:
Material, Tools & Equipment Required (If any):
Following materials used in Valve Timing Diagram of SI Engine:-

 Engine Specifications
 Timing Light
 Engine Timing Gear
 Degree Wheel
 Torque Wrench

Theory

The valve timing diagram is a graphical representation of the timing of the opening and
closing of the intake and exhaust valves in a spark ignition (SI) engine. This diagram is essential
for understanding the engine's operation, performance, and efficiency.
K EY P HASES OF THE E NGINE C YCLE

1. Intake Stroke (0° to 180°)

o Intake Valve Opens: Just before the piston reaches the top dead center (TDC), the
intake valve opens to allow the air-fuel mixture to enter the cylinder.
o Intake Valve Closes: The valve closes after the piston reaches the bottom dead
center (BDC) to seal the mixture inside the cylinder.

2. Compression Stroke (180° to 360°)

o Both valves are closed. The piston moves from BDC to TDC, compressing the
air-fuel mixture, which increases temperature and pressure.

3. Power Stroke (360° to 540°)

o Ignition Event: Occurs just before TDC, where the spark plug ignites the
compressed mixture, causing a rapid increase in pressure.
o Exhaust Valve Remains Closed: The piston moves down, converting the thermal
energy from combustion into mechanical energy.

4. Exhaust Stroke (540° to 720°)

o Exhaust Valve Opens: Opens just before the piston reaches BDC to allow
exhaust gases to exit.
o Exhaust Valve Closes: Closes after the piston reaches TDC, completing the four-
stroke cycle.

 Overlap Period: There is a phase where both intake and exhaust valves are slightly open.
This overlap aids in the scavenging process, helping to expel exhaust gases and drawing
in fresh air-fuel mixture.
 Valve Timing: The precise timing of the valve events is crucial for engine performance.
Adjusting the timing can optimize power output, fuel efficiency, and emissions.

Procedure:

Following procedures used in Valve timing diagram of SI Engine:-

Understand the Engine Cycle:

 Familiarize yourself with the four-stroke cycle: intake, compression, power, and exhaust.

Determine Valve Events:

 Gather information on intake and exhaust valve open/close timings (in degrees).
Plot the Diagram:

 Use the graph paper to draw the timing diagram based on the data you collected.

Label:

 Clearly label the intake and exhaust strokes, TDC (top dead center), BDC (bottom dead
center), and key timing points.

Safety Precaution, Application & Inference:

Following application of the Valve Timing Diagram of SI Engine:-

 Performance Tuning: Engineers and tuners can use the valve timing diagram to modify
valve timing for improved power output and torque characteristics, tailored for specific driving
conditions or racing applications.

 Fuel Efficiency Improvement: Adjustments to the valve timing can enhance the combustion
process, leading to better air-fuel mixing and improved fuel economy, which is increasingly
important for consumers and regulatory compliance.

 Emissions Control: By optimizing valve timing, manufacturers can reduce harmful

emissions. This is particularly relevant for meeting stringent environmental regulations, as better
timing helps minimize unburned hydrocarbons and NOx emissions.

 Engine Design Optimization: During the design phase, the valve timing diagram assists
engineers in selecting appropriate cam profiles and timing mechanisms, ensuring that the engine
performs efficiently across a range of speeds and loads.
