Course : Foundations of Descriptive Statistics

Unit I : Fundamentals of Statistics and Data Presentation

• Introduction: Use of Statistics in Data Science, Descriptive and inferential statistics.


• Scale of Measurement: Data on a Ratio Scale, Data on an Interval Scale, Data on an Ordinal
Scale, Data on a Nominal Scale, Continuous vs. Discrete Data.
• Collection of Data: Continuous and Discrete Variable, Quantitative and Qualitative Variable,
Collection of data and concept of a questionnaire and a schedule.
• Presentation of data: Tabulation (one -way, two – way tables), frequency distribution,
cumulative frequency (less than, greater than type).
• Graphical representation: Stem and Leaf Diagrams, Frequency Histograms, cumulative
frequency curves.
Unit II : Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion
• Arithmetic Mean, Median, Mode, Their Merits and Demerits.
• Geometric Mean and Harmonic Mean.
• Range, Quartile Deviation, Standard Deviation
• Coefficient of Range, QD and Coefficient of Variation.
Unit III : Correlation and Regression Analysis
• Concept of skewness and kurtosis : Measure of skewness and Kurtosis.
• Correlation: Measure of association between two variables. Scatter Diagram, Types of
correlation, Karl Pearson’s Coefficient of correlation and its mathematical properties,
Spearman’s Rank correlation and its interpretations.
• Regression Analysis: linear regression equations, properties of regression coefficients, Use in
forecasting and estimation computation, Relation between regression coefficients and
correlation.
• Coefficient, Concept, and use of coefficient of determination(R2 ).
Unit IV : Sampling and Estimation
• Sample from a distribution: Concept of a statistic estimate and its sampling distribution.
Parameter and it's estimator.
• Concept of bias and standard error of an estimator.
• Central Limit theorem (statement only).
• Sampling distribution of sample mean and sample proportion. (For large sample only)
Standard errors of sample mean and sample proportion.
• Point and Interval estimate of single mean, single proportion from sample of large size.
