Eco India in rural areas resolving and recurring the ancient tank, tank system in
someplace of villages in South India, Madurai…

In the village of Khampur in the Madurai district, there is a only p only pond in that
village, and there is no pipe connection not fixed to the households. People who live in
that village. The only source of water is that pond the village people depending on this
water for everything.

We are drinking washing for their livestock. They use pond Water, even though the water
in town is polluted, but this water is pure. The villagers are very confident and proud of
the water pond, they strictly follow the rules outside or not allowed inside the pond,
secondly, no one should split here and one cannot, was their hands or legs; dogs or
other animals or not allowed, even livestock is like cows or cows are not allowed inside.

Madurai is one of the most popular pilgrims sites of sites for Hindus, across the river
basin near the city as they visit different water bodies. The relationship people share with
Water is sacred and personal.

The irrigation tank near the village the locals, they called kambai, I want to put this here.
There is an NGO activist, who started the Dhan Foundation they help to recover the
ponds and rivers in certain villages of the South and north sides of India… he just
explained about the irrigation tank..

The speciality of the significance is that it is 1300 years old. The purpose of creating this
task was to change the nearby land into a cultivated landscape. If you look at the sluice
gate of this tank, it lies inside the water body. The sluice constructed how usually lies on
the river bank if the sluice is built inside, the bank does not cave, and secondly, the slip
from the tank would reach the fields, making it fertile.

There was a particular community who used to open and save these dams, in the local,
they were called as the murder. Madai translates as sluice gate in Madurai district. Most
of them or landless labour. Especially waters, hold their breath underwater to remove the
s stone, which is found below in the dam. Only if the stone is removed, water will flow
through the outlet into the fields. Sometimes occurs and people who go to open the
sluice are caught, record shows that during difficult times like flooding, losses were
conducted for the person before he goes into the water to open the sluice.

From that time, people have been dependent on these traditional water bodies using
phones for drinking and kanmai for forming. As they were dependent on them, people
turned the income from these water bodies as commons and used those very funds to
restore and maintain the water bodies. In that village, the method was called
Kodimaramathu-Kudi which means people, and maramathu means repair.

This system of the people maintaining the water bodies was called kudimaramathu. Over
time as the government took over control of the water bodies, people lost their
knowledge of these tanks. The next generation was clueless about how to save the water
bodies, why we should prepare them and how to maintain them.
