THE PROJECT
The Rabigh Phase II Project involves the expansion of Petro Rabigh’s Refining and
Petrochemical Complex located approximately 150km north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The
feasibility study for the expansion project started in April 2009. Construction is underway
and the project is expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2016.
The project will witness the expansion of the existing ethane cracker, construction of an
aromatic complex and an ethylene cracker debottlenecking plant. It will further enable
the complex to produce 30 million cubic feet per day of ethane and three million tons of
naphtha per year, which will be used as feedstock to produce a variety of petrochemical
products. The plant is set to produce an estimated 300,000t of ethylene per year.
Application of Nitocote EPSW
THE SOLUTION
In desalination area; Brine water and backwash tanks, aggressive conditions are
existing. The temperatures reaches 55, the tanks were exposed to direct sunlight, while
marine surroundings exert more abuse through the chloride attack which reaches its
maximum level at this part of the world. The designers here were required to specify a
heavy duty protection system that enables concrete to perform effectively during its
service life. The system was to be seamless and UV resistant with high physical
properties in terms of adhesion to concrete, flexibility and strengths. Nitocote EPSW
was the optimum coating that meets client requirements and assures best
performance during operation life of those tanks. Application of Nitocote EPSW
THE BENEFITS
By application of Nitocote EPSW, customer could assure that concrete will be safe for a
long period that exceeds 25 years of life expectancy. His operation can go smoothly
and no shutdown will occur because of any failure in the coating. Environmental issues
were also guaranteed as the material is safe; it has no volatile content and it prevents
any leakage to soil or surrounding environment.

THE PROJECT
A US $ 18.4 M wastewater treatment plant was constructed by Suido kiko in Sudair,
Riyadh. The plant will have an output capacity of 10,000 cubic meter/day of water. The
raw water with its strong chemicals necessitated the consideration of a high quality
coating which will not only protect the concrete surfaces but also provide an aesthetic
look to the waste water treatment plant. The coating surface area was 20,000 M2.
THE SOLUTION
Fosroc Products
The challenge was to provide a proper concrete protection coating which will not only
protect the concrete surfaces against the raw sewage water but also to the coating to
have a UV resistance property as the tanks are open to the atmosphere. The design life
of the structure is 50 years hence the coating was also expected to last the life of the
host concrete. Nitocote EPS was proposed after carefully analyzing all the project
parameters. The project requires the coating to be of international standards.
THE BENEFITS
Surface Preparatoion Works
The coating works were carried out under the supervision of FOSROC engineers by
Kayan Contracting Co who was the applicators of the coating works. The coating works
were completed to the full satisfaction of the client.
