Que. Design a flat slab (interior panel) for hall of dimension 36 x36m.

the size of column is (500x500mm) size

of drop panel is 2 x 2m. imposed load on slab is 2KN/m2 use M50 grade concrete. The length of the column is
4m.

1. given – a) column – 500 x 500mm b) Size of drop panel -2m x 2m c) Imposed load – 2KN/m2

2. size of drop panel – 2 x 2m

Size of slab panel – 6m x 6m

∴ L1=6m & L2=6m

∴ width of column strip =

L1 6
= =2m
3 3
∴the width of middle strip = (6 -1 – 1)

= 4m

- Thickness of slab (depth):

∴D=
L 6000
=
40 340
D = 150 mm

- thickness of drop panel:

∴ considering thickness of drop panel as 50% of depth of slab

= 50% X D

50
= X 150
100
= 75mm

∴ total thickness of slab at drop is

=150+75

d=255mm

3. load calculation:

0.225
a) dead load: the weight of slab = X 25
2
= 4.6875 KN/m2

∴ ultimate dead load = 1.5 X 4.6875

= 7.03 KN/m2

b) live load: 2KN/m2

∴ ultimate live load = Wul = 1.5 X 2 = 3KN/m2

∴ total ultimate load = W4 = Wul + Wud

= 7.03 + 3

W4 = 10.03KN/m2
4. Bending moment:

- design bending moment:

∴ Ln = 6 -
Wu X L2 X ln2 0.5 0.5
Mo = - = 5.5m
8 2 2
10.03 X 6 X 5.5 2
=
8
∴ Mo = 227.55 KN.m

- Distribution of moment:

1. for interior panel:

a. negative moment:

m-ve = 0.65 X Mo

= 0.65 X 227.55x106

= 147.90 KN.m

b. Positive moment:

m+ve = 0.35 X Mo

= 0.35 X 227.55x106

= 79.64 KN.m

2. moment for exterior panels:

a. Interior Negative moment:

M1 = α1 X Mo ∴ Stiffness for column:

0.10 4 EI 500 4
Kc = ; I= I=5.208X109
α1 = 0.75 - 1 l 12
1+
αc
4 X E X 5.208 x 10 9
Kc = l- length for column
∑ Kc 0.208 x 10 6 E 4000
αc = =
Ks 3.796 X 10 6 E
Kc = 5.208x106 E

∴ Stiffness for slab:

αc =1.37

0.10 4 EI bd 3 6000 X 2253

Ks= ; I= = I=
α1 = 0.75 - 1 l 12 12
1+ 5.695x103
1.37

∴ Ks= ∴ Ks= 3.79x106 E

α1 = 0.692 4 X E X 5.695 x 10
6000

b. positive Design Moment:

M2 = α2 X Mo 0.28 0.28
= 0.468 X 227.55x106 α2 = 0.63 - 1 = 0.63 - 1
M2= 106.49 KN.m 1+ 1+
αc 1.37
α2 = 0.468

c. exterior negative moment:

M3 = α2 X Mo = 0.375 X 227.55x106 0.65 0.65

M3 = 83.33KN.m α3 = 1 = 1
1+ 1+
αc 1.37
α3= 0.375

∴ Maximum hogging moment design

= 157.46 KN.m

∴ Maximum sagging moment

= 106.64 KN.m

5. Distribution table:

negative moment = 36.975
Positive moment 0.60 X 79.64 79.64 – 47.784

Outer panel 1.0 X 83.33

Thus Mu = 227.55 KN.m < Mulim = 349.31 KN.m

Tc = 0.25√ Fck

=0.25√ 50

Tc = 1.76 N/mm2

∴Tc’ = 1 X 1.76

=1.76 N/mm2
As Tc’ > Tc

1.76 > 0.55 (N/mm2)

∴ hence safe
