INTRO TO NATUROPATHY
HISTORY TO NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy- or nature cure" is a
method of healing that employs various
natural means to empower on
individual to achieve the highest
possible level of health. Although the
term Naturopathic Medicine was not
used until the late nine tenth century, its
philosophical roots go back thousands
of years.
HISTORY TO NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy draws on the healing
wisdom of many countries, including
India (Ayurveda), China (Taoism), and
Greece (Hippocrates). The European
tradition of "taking the cure" at natural
springs or spas gained a foothold in
America by the middle of the 18th
century, making the United States
receptive to the ideas of naturopathy.
HISTORY TO NATUROPATHY
Among the movements' earliest
promoters were Father Sebastian
Kneipp, a Priest who credited His
recovery from tuberculosis to bathing in
the Danube, and Banedict Lust. A
Physician who trained at the water-cure
clinic that Kniepp founded in Europe.
HISTORY TO NATUROPATHY
Lust arrived in the US in the 1890's and
began using the term "Naturopathy" to
described an eclectic combination of
natural healing doctrines.
HISTORY TO NATUROPATHY
In 1902, Lust Founded the first US
college of naturopathic medicine in
New York City. It taught a system of
what was then known about Nutritional
Therapy, Natural Diet, Herbal Medicine,
Homeopathy, Spinal manipulation,
Exercise Therapy
HISTORY TO NATUROPATHY
Hydro therapy, Electrotherapy, Stress
Reduction, and other Natural Therapies.
The natural system for curing disease is
based on a return to nature in regulating
the diet, breathing, exercising, bathing and
the employment of various forces to
eliminate the poisonous product in the
system. And so raise the vitality of the
patient to a proper standard of health.
THE OLD PARADIGM OF HEALING
1. The body is a machine
2.The body and mind are separate
3. Emphasize the elimination of disease
4. Treat the symptoms
5. Use high technology
6. Focus on objective information( how the
patient is doing base on charts, statistic,
test result. Etc.)
THE OLD PARADIGM OF HEALING
7. The physician should be emotionally
neutral and detached:
8. The physician is the all- knowing
authority.
9. The physicians is in central of the
patients health decisions.
THE NEW PARADIGM OF HEALING
1. Address the whole Patient
2. The body and the mind are inter
connected
3. Emphasize achieving good health
4. Treat Underlying causes
5. Take an integrated approach.
6. Focus on diet, lifestyle. and preventive
measure.
THE NEW PARADIGM OF HEALING
7. Focus on subjective information (how the
patient is feeling)
8. The physician's caring and empathy are
critical to healing.
9. The physician is a partner in the healing
process.
10. The patient is in charge of health care
choices.
IRIDOLOGY
History of Iridology
Dr. Ignatz Von Peczely - Egervar, Budapest,
Hungary discovered nature's record in the
eye quite by accident when he is only ten
years old. While playing with an owl, he
happened to break one of the iris of the bird,
and later found that the darkened area
corresponded to the location of the broken
leg. Eventually this black streak became a
tiny black spot, around which were white
lines and shading.
History of Iridology
This incident made a lasting impression upon
the mind of the future doctor, and when
working later in the college hospital and in
surgical wards he had a good opportunity to
observe the eyes of patients accidents and
before and after operations. In this manner. He
was enabled to construct the first chart Of the
iris. He did not follow up the relations suggested
by the changes in the iris of the owl until about
1861 when he was treating his very sick mother.
History of Iridology
At the age of 36 he became interested in
medicine and studied first in Budapest in 1862.In
1866 he started practi cing in Budapest, and
published his first book on the iris, "Discovery in
the Realm of Nature and Art of Healing".
Nils Liljequist a Swedish homeopath, discovered
and improved many of the methods of iris
diagnosis and brought this work to America.
History of Iridology
His writings were translated into two
volumes called " Diagnosis from the Eye".
He also discovered the effects of quinine
and iodine that appeared in the eye.
History of Iridology
Henry Edward Lane- a native of Australia,
taught iridology. He wrote his book, known
as "Iridology, the diagnosis from the eye".
Dr.Henry Lindlahr - He is from Chicago. He
applied iridology in his Natural
Therapuetics. He wrote a book known as
"Iris Diagnosis“
Peter Johannes Thiel - He is from Germany.
He is known as the "The Great Iridologist".
History of Iridology
Dr. J. Haskell Kritxer - He wrote the book "
Iris Diagnosis and Guide In Treatment“
Dr. Marks J. Petinak and Dr. F.W. Collins
contributed the chart in Iridology.
BDr. R. M. Mclain. He is from Oackland,
California. He devoted himself in teaching
iridology for many years.
History of Iridology
Dr. Bernard Jensen He is known as the
Father of American Iridology. He
formulated the American iridology chart.
Dra. Elizabeth Acosta Micaller started
teaching iridology in the Philippines in
1982.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
In order to determine abnormalities in the body
and to make use of the iris findings, there is a
definite philosophy which must be understood
and applied. In order to understand the science
of iridology, it is necessary to be in accord with
the philosophy that goes with it. What more
need a doctor know than the location of the
inflammation in the body, the stage it is in, how
it arrived there, how to free the body of it, and
most of all, when you have freed it?
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
The person who believes sulfa drugs will
cure a disease, would be likely to disregard
the significance of the alterations which
will be recorded in the iris as a result of
administration of these drugs. A workable
philosophy will help us to understand that
the "eyes are the windows of the soul".
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
Truly, they bear witness to the workings
and conditions of every organs of the body.
To know this science completely would be
impossible. The honest iridologist realizes
that more truth is recorded in the eyes
than he is capable of analyzing. When we
see evidences in the eyes of improved
conditions
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
we are reminded of the quotation from the
Bible, "The light of the body is the eye; if
therefore thine eye be single, thy whole
body shall be full of light. But if thine eye
be evil, thy whole body shall be full of
darkness". The perfect eye shows no flaws,
no holes, no inherent weakness, no
distortion of fibers, no deposits, and is a
perfect color, either blue or brown.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
The ordinary diagnostician, not
knowing what the appearance of the
perfect eye, would be unable to
understand, and probably unwilling to
believe, that any variation from this
perfection is a sign of lowered
function, a condition of disease or
disharmony.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
One who analyses from the standpoint of the
cause and effect relations in natural law, will
be able not only to recognize the disorders
which are represented in the iris, but will
recognize the progress of correction, and will
observe and follow the healing signs as they
become manifest in the iris. This person will
be aware that a sound philosophy is
connected with the science of iridology.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
Doctors employing natural methods of
healing know that health is affected by
habitual diet, and that the body must live by
what it gets through its environment. Man
molds himself in accordance with whatever
he feeds his body [ the solids and liquids
taken into his stomach], by the air that comes
Some of the lines may be separated and allow
part of the dark pigment underneath to
show.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
This signifies weak tissue structure and an
inherent weakness in that particular area.
Broken fibers indicate degeneration in the
corresponding tissues. When nerve fibres are
pulling up or drawing together in any one
spot, we refer to them as cramp rings. The
outside rim of the iris in any one organ area
may be very dark, showing that the skin
covering that area is very inactive and that
toxic material has settled there.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
Uneliminated fatigue acids and uric acid may
have settled there. The signs of these acids
may appear in The varying shades from the
white of the The signs of these acids may
appear in the varying shades from the white
of the acute to the very dark of the chronic.
By these signs we determine how acute is the
inflammation, where the inflammation is, and
we can watch it increase or disappear,
according to the person's living habits.
Philosophical Phase of Iridology
The accompanying diagram illustrates this
condition, and the explanation under it
gives you a philosophy to follow regarding
the relationship of the iris to the rest of the
body. We know that all we do is recorded
in the mind and also that the mind has
records of every disease, habit, etc. These
are reflected directly through the nervous
system to the iris of the eye.
What is Iridology?
• Iris is the pigmented
round, contractile
membrane of the eye,
situated between the
cornea and lens, and
perforated by the pupil.
• It is the portion of the
eye that carries the
color.
What is Iridology?
• Iridology- is the science and practice
that reveals inflammation, where
located, and in what stage it is
manifesting. It reveals body
constitution, inherent weaknesses,
levels of health and the transitions
that take place in a person’s body
according to the way he lives.
What is Iridology?
• It is also the science of analyzing the
delicate structures of the iris of the
eye.

Bernard Jensen
I dedicate this book
to my fellow
iridologists and to
Iridology, the
profession which I
have been called to
serve.
I BELIEVE
I believe in iridology as the “eye” of the natural
healing arts, the window through which the wholistic
perspective on health becomes understandable.
• I believe in iridology as a reliable means of assessing
what is happening in the body. When we know what
is happening in the body, we can choose the path to
high-level wellness.
• I believe in iridology as the analysis to use in any of
the healing arts to monitor and evaluate how well a
therapy is working.
I BELIEVE
• I believe in iridology as the only analysis which
reveals conditions before symptoms appear and
shows abnormal conditions for which no symptoms
will ever appear.
• I believe in iridology as a wonderful means of
demonstrating the rewards of choosing a healthy
way of life, the ideal of preventive medicine.
• I believe in iridology and nutrition as the twin
guiding stars that will bring in a new profession
equally uplifting for both doctor and patient.
THE THEORETICAL PHASE OF
IRIDOLOGY
• The diagram illustrates
the functional activity of
the heart, sending
vibratory impulses, by
way of the ciliary
ganglion, directly to the
heart area of the iris.
Similarly, the kidney could
be responsible for nerve
tension reflex signs in the
iris, as could also the
stomach or the thyroid
gland.
This chart indicates the location of
the areas of inflammation, acute,
sub-acute, chronic, and
degenerative. From each section a
rate of vibration or a nerve
impulse is carried to the brain
area, registering a picture and
transmitting it to the iris of the
eye. Acute areas show up very
white, while more advanced
stages grow darker until the black,
which indicates the destructive
stage of degenerated tissue,
appears. This demonstrates
hypoactive and hyperactive
conditions.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
Inflammation is a reconstructive
process and should not be
suppressed. Every acute disease is
a result of cleansing and healing
efforts of nature.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
When we look at the body, it may seem to
be as senseless as wood; it cannot make
suggestions or ask for anything except
through pain or symptoms. But even
psychologists admit that there is such a
thing as cell intelligence. To the doctor
treating a body and observing changes, the
latter seem as though speaking a language
of the flesh- the language of cell life.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
The law of change is constantly going
on in every organ and every cell of the
body, and must be answered. Cell life
molds itself from the very air we
breathe, the food we eat, the thoughts
and feelings we entertain, and the
home life we habitually live.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
Today we are subjected to living habits
which force cell changes that produce
our chronic diseases. Our living habits
produce the kind of body we have, this
body in turn is responsible for the
effects in health or disease.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
Many changes in the healing systems have
taken place due to the fact that at one
time sanitary conditions had to be
considered above all else. Plagues of the
past were due to filth and lack of sewage
disposal in cities. We know through
experiments and experiences that we can
develop most types of disease to which we
suffer today can be traced back to some
chemical imbalance within the body.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
In developing our theory on chronic
stages of disease as seen in the iris,
iridology brings out the fact that chronic
diseases are developed over a period of
time. This has been proven through all
nature –cure sciences, including
homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic,
and naturopathy.
HOW DISEASE BECOMES CHRONIC
Nature is interested in giving us at
birth as disease free a body as
possible, but our living habits and
our abuse of the body through life
produce chronic disease.
The Principles Of Cure
All diseases are curable, but not every
patient. It is difficult to know just exactly
where to start in order to help a patient,
but it seems to me that the first
principle is the realization that what will
prevent a disease will also cure it. The
cure is found in the prevention.
The Principles Of Cure
There are three principles of cure which we
should particularly remember. First, the
body must have a healthy blood stream,
for without this the body cannot have a
healthy cell structure. Since cell life is
dependent upon the blood, this must be
kept clean and toxin- free. Dr. Still, the
founder of Osteopathy, said: “The rule of
the artery is supreme.”
The Principles Of Cure
What flows in the arteries determines
whether the body needs can be met. Make
sure that vital foods are going into the
body so that cell life, through its inherent
nature can absorb its requirements from
the blood. Cell structures depend upon the
materials that are floating around in the
blood stream for their needs, and healthy
blood carries all required elements.
The Principles Of Cure
. It is up to us to see to it that vital
nutrients are taken into the body and
are properly assimilated, so that the
blood can carry the elements needed
by all body structures.
The Principles Of Cure
The second principle is very important.
It is that blood must circulate rapidly
enough to supply cell structures with all
the necessary building elements. It
must circulate fast enough to give the
body the opportunity to build and repair
as is required
The Principles Of Cure
The third principle is rest. Rest cures. The
first thing a sick person feels naturally
inclined to do is lie down. Gravity exerts its
least detrimental effect when the body is
lying in a prone position. Therefore, rest
allows the body to recuperate and
regenerate. Tiredness was given to us as a
barometer and fatigue is the first symptom
of all disease.

Purification of the blood is the first thing
to consider in eradicating disease.
There can be no disease if we have
clean blood, a good circulation, and the
right mental attitude concerning bodily
needs.
The Principles Of Cure
There is only one way to effect a
“cure”, and that is the natural way. Eat
natural foods, rest sufficiently, and
stimulate active circulation.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
“All cure from within out and from the
head down and in reverse order as the
symptoms have appeared.”
-Hering’s Law of Cure
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
In dealing with the healing crisis we
can take up only the theoretical side
because first we must have had a
certain amount of practical study and
application of this science in order to
understand the crisis and the iris
changes.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
In our philosophy we do not rely upon
the name of a disease to signify the
cause or the treatment. We deal with
the body in its entirety. We must make
a start in finding the causes and must
have a philosophy to follow as we
proceed in our iris work.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
In the next few chapters we will go
into iris color and shading and how
these variations are to correspond
with different disease and
symptoms.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
For instance, starting with a cold, which is
one of the first eliminative processes of
the body, we find that the cold symptom
reflects in the iris as a very light whitish
shading of the fibers, quite devoid of the
pigment found in the deeper layers of the
iris. As the sub-acute stage develops, the
white becomes gray and the fiber you are
watching in the iris recedes.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
As this condition develops into one more
chronic, we find that the gray fiber
becomes darker and almost black and
recedes to a place where only the
pigments beneath are showing through.
Just as we watch this condition develop in
the iris as disease progresses in the body,
we can also watch the condition in
reverse as good health returns.

recedes to a place where only the

Just as we watch this condition develop in
the iris as disease progresses in the body,
we can also watch the condition in
reverse as good health returns.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
Watch the alteration in these dark
holes or dark sections in the iris as
the patient follow the right living
methods. Watch the little gray and
white lines reappear.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
Finally, the white appears again in
the iris as it was in the original
acute stage. Thus, this reversal
process can be clearly followed in
all its stages.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
Thus, this reversal process can be
clearly followed in all its stages.
Observing iris changes is one of the
finest means of watching this
reversal process take place in the
body through reflex actions.
THE THEORY OF THE HEALING CRISIS
Though this reflecting mirror on
the outside of the body we can
watch recuperation take place. As
the skin becomes cleared, we can
see that condition-taking place by
changes in the iris of the eye.

Stages of Tissue
These illustrations approximate the appearance of the
various degrees of inflammation. The white represents the
acute; the light gray the sub-acute; the dark gray, the
chronic; and the black, the destructive stage. We produce
chronic conditions through our habits. When suppressed,
acute conditions first become sub-acute and finally chronic
in nature. These conditions are evidenced by
discolorations in the iris as indicated in the above diagram.
4 Stages of Tissue Activity
In describing the stages of disease as found in
the iris, I believe it would be helpful to give the
medical definitions of these terms and then how
they relate to iridology.
4 Stages of Tissue Activity
According to Taber’s Medical Dictionary
1. ACUTE- sharp, severe, having rapid onset,
severe symptoms and a short course. Not
chronic
2. SUB-ACUTE- between acute and chronic, with
some acute features, said of the course of a
disease.
4 Stages of Tissue Activity
3. CHRONIC- long drawn out; of long duration;
designating a disease showing little change or of
slow progression and long continuance.
- opposed to acute
4. DEGENERATIVE- deterioration or impairment
of an organ or part in the structure of cells and
the substance of which they are a part.
- opposed to regeneration.
ACUTE SIGN
Acute signs appear as an
increase in the
dimensions or
prominence of the
superficial iris fibers. They
appear elevated with a
change in color to white
in the blue iris very light
yellow in brown iris. The
intensity of the white or
yellow varies according to
the activity of the acute
process.
ACUTE SIGN
Iridology is an
invaluable aid in
determining
whether we are
developing a
chronic condition
or reversing from
chronic back to the
acute, as found in
Hering’s law of
cure.
ACUTE SIGNS
ACUTE SIGNS
ACUTE SIGNS
ACUTE SIGN
Acute inflammation represents an increased
or disturbed metabolic rate in the area in
which it is found, attended by an increased
supply of blood, hormonal secretions, lymph
and nerve force. It manifests as discomfort,
discharge, inflammation of tissue, fever, and
pain.
ACUTE SIGN
The more active the acute process, the
greater the disturbance of the usual
biochemical balance in the corresponding
area; generally the change is toward extreme
acidity.
ACUTE SIGN
Acidity and catarrh always work together;
wherever there is acidity, there is catarrh,
phlegm, or mucus to carry the acids away
through the five elimination channels. This
elimination may occur in only one organ or in
several organs simultaneously.
ACUTE SIGN
An acute condition may result from such
pathogens as a mechanical irritation,
chemical deficiency or bacterial invasion.
Acute symptoms such as aches, pain and
discharges may also be signs of a latent
chronic condition.
ACUTE SIGN
We can distinguish this situation from the
former condition by studying the history of
the individual. If he has use suppressive
medications over many years, if he has been
“burning the candle at both ends” for a long
time, there is a good chance the symptoms
represent the emergence of a latent chronic
condition.
ACUTE SIGN
On the other hand, if he has been living
correctly, eating sensibly and letting mucus
elimination’s proceed without suppression,
then the symptoms probably represent only
a minor acute elimination without underlying
chronic condition.
ACUTE SIGN
When treating an acute condition,
suppressive medication should never be
used. These only dry up the mucus and drive
the catarrh deeper into the tissues, stopping
the free flow of the catarrh, and causing
regression into a sub-acute condition.
ACUTE SIGN
It is best assist the elimination with water
treatments, herbs, manipulation, nutrition,
etc. Rest, eat less solid food and let the
elimination take place. In this manner the
tissue is cleansed and returned to a higher
state of vitality.
ACUTE SIGN
However, if the acute condition is the result
of a chronic condition found elsewhere, it is
important to find the source of the difficulty
and tackle not the superficial symptoms.
ACUTE SIGN
The acute symptoms which stem from a
chronic condition are cared for in a different
manner than those symptoms which began
in the initial buildup of chronic disease. We
virtually ignore the acutely active secondary
organ and concentrate on detoxifying the
chronic tissue that is creating the
disturbance.
ACUTE SIGN
A good example would be that of the toxic
bowel, which, in our culture, is very often the
culprit. The absorption of toxic waste from
the bowel can cause an acute reaction in
what we call the secondary organ, which
gives rise to a host of symptoms. We must
detoxify the bowel first, disarming the cause
of the problem.
ACUTE SIGN
Iridology is a master in science in detecting
the chronic conditions which are behind in
many of the acute symptoms that adults
have, those that were not properly taken
care of on their younger years.
ACUTE SIGN
It is for us to find out if we are treating first
cause of acute manifestations or the chronic
reaction.
ACUTE SIGN
Many times we do not realize the extent of
the interrelationship between the different
organs. It is well to recognize that we must
take care of the whole body and treat it as a
union of various organs capable of working in
perfect harmony with one another in order
to experience optimum function.
ACUTE SIGN
Western medicine, as a rule, suppresses
acute symptoms. However, if no changes are
made in the diet and lifestyle habits of the
patient, the root of the problem prevails and
the acute condition retreats into a sub-acute
stage.
ACUTE SIGN
Let’s be clear on this, Suppression of
symptoms is always a mistake, whether the
expression of symptoms is a sign of an acute,
sub-acute, or a chronic condition.
SUB-ACUTE SIGNS
The sub-acute stage is expressed through the iris in
similar manner as the acute stage; however, the white or
yellow is less intense; the white is a grayish white; the
yellow is more pigment- influenced and cloudy. The fibers
are not elevated, rather they have receded back into the
stoma and reflects less light.
SUB-ACUTE SIGNS
The metabolic rate has not been sustained. There is a
lesser degree of blood, lymph, and nerve flow, and the
vital force is depressed. There is less pain and discharge
for the moment, often leading us to mistakenly assume
we are “cured”. The sub-acute condition will finally
regress into a chronic condition if the diet and lifestyle
habits are not corrected
SUB ACUTE SIGNS
SUB ACUTE SIGNS
SUB ACUTE SIGNS
CHRONIC SIGNS
Chronic signs in the iris as
dark gray, in the blue iris
and the dull dark yellow
brown in the brown iris.
The metabolic rare is
lowered with a concurrent
decreased in blood, and
innervation. The immune
system is weakened to the
point that it can no longer
resist so-called disease.
CHRONIC SIGNS
CHRONIC SIGNS
CHRONIC SIGNS
CHRONIC SIGNS
In a chronic state, the body functions are
quite sluggish. Toxins are not eliminated
properly, often being picked up and
deposited in other tissues, which have
decreased resistance. Fatigue results, and
the body is slow to respond to corrective
therapy.
CHRONIC SIGNS
In many years to build a chronic disease as a
result of poor eating and living habits. It
may lie latent for many years before new
symptoms are expressed.
All too often, the chronic condition is
taken care of by more suppressive
treatments, so the patient’s original trouble
is still not cared for.
CHRONIC SIGNS
When chronic condition grows active and
symptoms emerge, it is an attempt by the
body to get rid of the underlying factors
causing the problem.
If the chronic condition is not brought
back into an active state, it will become
degenerative.
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
Degenerative signs
are expressed in the
iris as a
disappearance or
recession of
superficial fibers s
that the lowest level is
in evidence. The
typical appearance of
such an area is black.
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
The degenerative condition is
indicated when the body no longer has
the strength to produce a fever. It is
slowly but steadily losing ground. We
have a condition or ailment which is
now difficult to reverse or correct, such
as any one of these: arthritis,
emphysema, cancer, diabetes, etc.
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
There are different
symptoms expressed in
every stage activity. The
homeopath endeavors to
analyze the body by
symptoms, whereas
iridology goes directly to
the iris and analyzes the
state of inflammation as it
is manifested in the eyes.
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
The vital force of any one organ. The
upgrading of the elements in any organ one
organ is dependent upon the upgrading of
the elements in every organ. Each state of
inflammation is treated through the
application of nutrients, rest, adequate
innervation and good circulation. In this
way, we take care of the patient instead of
the disease.
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
The body is a miraculous self-healer.
Even in the chronic state it can reverse
disease. When it reaches a state of
degeneration, however the vital force is
so diminished that the breakdown of
the tissue is stronger than the
regenerative power. Even in this
condition, iridology, in this basic
philosophy, offers a ray of hope.
DEGENERATIVE SIGNS
We must cleanse, then nourish and
strengthen the integrity of the whole
organism so that it will be able to reverse
itself through the previous stages from
which it evolved. Once this is accomplished,
once it has again reached an acute state of
activity, it will carry off the accumulated
mucus, latent infections and miasmic
conditions. This is the eliminating stage or
healing crisis.
