The Playful Masters of the Sea

What animal can jump as high as a building, has a smile that never fades, and loves to play in
the water? If you guessed a dolphin, you are right! Dolphins are one of the most interesting
creatures in the ocean. They are smart, playful, and very beautiful. Let’s learn more about
these wonderful animals!

What Do Dolphins Look Like?

Dolphins are part of the whale family and have smooth, rubbery skin. They are usually a
mix of black, white, and grey colour. They have two fins on their sides, a triangular fin on
their back, and a flat and horizontal tail. Their tail helps them to swim quickly in the
water. Unlike fish, a dolphin’s tail moves up and down, allowing it to travel faster. Dolphins
also have an *insulating layer of fat under their skin called blubber, which keeps them
warm in the cold ocean waters.

Where Do Dolphins Live?

Dolphins live in seas, oceans, and rivers around the world. They
are social creatures that prefer to live in groups called pods. These
pods can be made up of dolphins of all ages and sizes. Some dolphins, Dolphins in a pod
like the dusky dolphins, form huge groups called superpods, where over a thousand
dolphins live together.

How Do Dolphins Hunt?

Dolphins are smart hunters. They often hunt in groups. Bottlenose

dolphins, for example, swim in circles around schools of fish and use
their tails to stir up the sand on the ocean floor. This creates a cloudy
circle that traps the fish. When the fish try to jump out, other dolphins Bottlenose dolphins

catch them in their mouths! Dolphins also love to jump out of the water, a
behaviour known as breaching. They can jump as high as a house roof and even flip onto
their backs or sides. Dolphins breach to tell each other when food is nearby or just to have
fun.

Dolphins are truly amazing animals. From their playful jumping and beautiful colours to
their smart ways of catching food and living in pods, there is so much to love about dolphins.
Next time you see a picture or video of a dolphin, remember how special and fun they are!
