1. Let V be a vector space, and W1 W2 be two subspaces of V . Show that W1 ∩ W2 is a

subspace of V . Give an example to show that W1 ∪ W2 need not be a subspace.

2. Let Mn (R) be the set of all n × n matrices with real entries. Let Dn (R) be the set all
n × n diagonal matrices (i.e. matrices whose off-diagonal elements are zero) and Dnc (R)
be the set of all n × n matrices whose diagonal elements are zero. Show that
(i) Mn (R) is a vector space,
(ii) Dn (R) and Dnc (R) are both subspaces of Mn (R).
(iii) Dn (R) ∩ Dnc (R) = {0} the n × n zero matrix.
(iv) Any matrix A ∈ Mn (R) can be uniquely written as A = B + C, where B ∈ Dn (R)
and C ∈ Dnc (R).

3. Let C 0 ([0, 1]) be the set of all real valued continuous functions on [0, 1], and C r ([0, 1]) be
the set of all real values r-times differentiable functions on [0, 1], for r ≥ 1. Then show
that
(i) C 0 ([0, 1]) is a vector space,
(ii) C r ([0, 1]) is a subspace of C 0 ([0, 1]), for all r ≥ 1,
(iii) there is a chain of subspaces

· · · ⊂ C r+1 ([0, 1]) ⊂ C r ([0, 1]) ⊂ · · · ⊂ C 1 ([0, 1]) ⊂ C 0 ([0, 1]).

4. Show that a system of two linear equations in three variables either has no common
solutions or infinitely many common solutions.

5. Find the solution of the following system of linear equations:

x − 2y + 3z = 1

3x + y − 5z = 7
x+y+z =1

6. Discuss why adding scalar multiple of one equation to another does not change the solution
set for any system of linear equations.

7. Show that the span of {(1, 2, 0), (2, 1, 0), (1, 1, 1)} is whole of R3 .

8. Find a basis of for the the plane ax + by + cz = 0 as the vector subspace of R3 .

9. Find a basis for the subspace spanned by {(2, 1), (2, 2), (0, 3)} in R2 .

10. Show that the vectors (1, 1) (i, i) in C2 are linearly independent over R, and linearly
dependent over C.

11. Let V be a vector space over C. If the set {u1 , u2 } is a basis, then the sets {u1 + u2 , αu1 }
and {αu1 , βu2 }, where α, β ∈ C \ {0}, is also a basis for V .

12. Consider the equation x1 + x2 + · · · + xn = 0 over R. Show that the set of all solutions of
this equation, say W , is a subspace of Rn . Find a basis for the subspace W .
