ROLL CRUSHER
AIM:

To determine the reduction ratio and power required for the roll crusher to crush a material of
known work index.

THEORY

Schematic representation of Roll crusher

A Roll crusher is a type of coarse crusher with heavy metal rolls turning on horizontal axes. Particles
of feed caught between the rolls are broken in compression and dropped. The limiting sizes of
particles that can be nipped by the rolls depend on the coefficient of friction between the particle
and the roll surface. Its estimate value is

Dpmax =0.08 + d

Where, d is the width of gap between rolls.

R is the roll radius

The size of product depends upon the clearance between the rolls.

Where,

P – Power, kW

M - Mass flow rate, tones/hour

Wi - Work index

Dp - Particle diameter, mm

Dpa - Particle diameter of feed, mm and

Dpb - Particle diameter for product,mm

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
Roll crusher, containers, Sieve shaker and weighing machine.

PROCEDURE:
1. Collect 500g of feed stock of approximately 12 mm size.

2. 2.Adjust the clearance of equipment suitable for the feed.

3. Check all connections

4. Start the machine in no load condition and note the time taken for 20 pulses

5. Repeat the same procedure in loading condition.

6. Record the total time for crushing.

7. Collect the product and perform sieve analysis

8. Calculate the reduction ratio and power required for crushing from the obtained value

Average feed size:

D pa=¿ 12mm

Average particle size:

xi -mass fraction of ith particle

Reduction ratio:

CALCULATIONS:

P ×3600
Power without load, PNL = =( 20×3600 )/ (38.04×3200) = 0.5914 kW
T NL× EMC
P ×3600
Power with load, PL = = ( 20×3600 )/ (31.16×3200) = 0.722
T L× EMC
kW

Pactual = PL- PNL = 0.722 - 0.5614 = 0.1306 kW

Σ (xi/Davg) = 0.1909

Mass flow rate, m =Wf = ( 495.3×3600)/(53.93×1000) tones/hr
T total × 1000

Power calculated,Pcal = m × 0.3162 × Wi[ − ]
√ D pb √ D pa
= 0.033×0.3162×16.06× (1/5.25^0.5 -1/12^0.5)

= 0.02474 kw

Reduction ratio = = 12/5.25=2.285
Diameter of product

MODEL CALCULATIONS:

For mesh size 60,

Davg = 0.3025

Xi =0.0018

Xi
=0.0059
Davg
Cumulative mass fraction = 0.9728

RESULT:

The power required and reduction ratio of given material are:

Power required = 0.02474 kw

Reduction ratio = 2.2875

INFERENCE:

Since we get reduction ratio above 3, the rollcrusher has a really good efficiency and upon further
calculation we get an efficiency of 82.85% .
