Lesson Plan: Division of Decimals

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Duration: 50 minutes

Common Core Standards:

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7: Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and
with decimals to hundredths.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.6: Solve real-world problems involving division of fractions.

---

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand how to divide decimals up to two decimal places.
- Students will be able to perform division of decimals by converting them into whole numbers.
- Students will apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems involving division of decimals.

---

Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Worksheets with practice problems
- Pencils and erasers
- Access to a calculator (optional)
- Notebook for students

---

Lesson Outline:
Introduction (10 minutes)
1. Greeting and Warm-up:
- Begin with a friendly greeting and ask students how they feel about math today.
- Introduce the topic of the lesson: "Today, we will learn about dividing decimals!"

2. Engagement:
- Show a brief video clip (if available) or read a short story that involves dividing items (like
candies or toys) among friends to relate to the concept of division.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Explain Division of Decimals:
- Write the definition of division on the board: "Division is splitting a number into equal parts."
- Explain that dividing decimals is similar to dividing whole numbers but requires special
attention to decimal points.

2. Steps to Divide Decimals:

- Step 1: Get rid of the decimal point in the divisor (the number you are dividing by) by
multiplying both the divisor and the dividend (the number being divided) by 10, 100, etc., as
needed.
- Step 2: Perform the division as you would with whole numbers.
- Step 3: Place the decimal point in the quotient (the answer) based on the number of decimal
places you moved in the divisor.

3. Example Problem:
- Solve the problem: 6.4 ÷ 0.4
- Convert to whole numbers: 64 ÷ 4 = 16
- Therefore, 6.4 ÷ 0.4 = 16.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Practice Problems:
- Write the following problems on the board and solve them together as a class:
- 5.6 ÷ 0.8
- 7.2 ÷ 0.6
- 3.5 ÷ 0.7
- Encourage students to explain their thought process as they solve each problem.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Worksheets:
- Hand out worksheets with problems for students to practice on their own.
- Problems should include:
- 8.4 ÷ 0.2
- 9.6 ÷ 0.4
- 1.5 ÷ 0.3
- Students will work independently to solve these problems.

Closing (5 minutes)
1. Review Key Concepts:
- Summarize the steps for dividing decimals.
- Ask students to share one thing they learned today.

2. Exit Ticket:
- Have students write down one problem they solved and the steps they took to solve it to turn
in as they leave.

Assessment:
- Observe student participation during guided practice.
- Review worksheets to assess understanding of dividing decimals.
- Evaluate exit tickets for comprehension of the lesson.

---

Additional Notes:
- Be prepared to provide extra help for students who may struggle with the concept.
- Encourage students to use calculators for checking their work, but emphasize understanding
the process first.
