What is It

A. METRIC UNITS OF LENGTH:

METRE or METER (m) is the fundamental unit of length. The prefixed

forms take care of the place values for meter as can be seen below.
1 kilometer (km) = 1000m 1 decimeter (dm) = 0.1m
1 hectometer (hm) = 100m 1 centimeter (cm) = 0.01m
1 dekameter (dkm) = 10m 1 millimeter (mm) = 0.001m

Converting a unit to an equivalent smaller or larger unit is easy if

we arrange the prefixed forms in the following order.

km , hm , dkm , m, d, cm , mm
X
0.001 0.01 0.1 1 10 100 1000
mm cm dm m dkm hm km
÷
 To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, MULTIPLY by the
appropriate power of 10 or simply move decimal points as many
places to the LEFT as the power indicates.

EXAMPLE:
1) Convert 2 kilometer to meters

0.001 0.01 0.1 1 10 100 1000

mm cm dm m dkm hm km
Solution:
Since kilometer is 3 units bigger than meter, more than
decimal 3 times to the left or multiply 1000
Answer: 2 x 1000 = 2000 meters
 To convert from smaller unit to a larger unit, DIVIDE by the
appropriate power of 10 or move the decimal points as many
places to the RIGHT as the power indicates.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

EXAMPLE:
2) Convert 12 millimeter to centimeter

0.001 0.01 0.1 1 10 100 1000

mm cm dm m dkm hm km

Solution:
Since millimeter is 1 unit smaller than centimetre, move
the decimal 1 time to the right or divide by 10.
Answer: 12 ÷ 10 = 1.2 centimeter

Another Examples:
1) Convert 1.35 meter to centimeters
Solution:
1.35 m x 100cm = 135cm, since 100cm = 1cm
1m
Hence,
1.35m = 135cm
2) Rename 535 km to meters
Solution:
535 km x 1000m 1000 m = 1km
1km
= 535,000m
3) What is 3450cm in dm?
Solution:
3450cm x 1dm = 3450 = 345dm
10cm

B. MEASURES OF AREA:
The size of the region of a closed figure is its area. It is associated
with the number of squares contained on this region. The metric system
uses the square meter (m2) as the unit of area. A square centimeter
is used to measure small areas. A square millimeter is used to
measure microscopic objects and square kilometers are used to
measure very large areas.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

THE METRIC SQUARE UNITS
1000000 square meters (m2) = 1 square kilometre (km2)
10,000 square meters = 1 square hectometer
2
(hm )100 square meters = 1 square dekameter
2
(dkm )1 square meter = 1 square meter (m2)
0.01 square meter = 1 square decimeter (dm2)
0.0001 square meter = 1 square centimeter (cm2)
0.000001 square meter = 1 square millimeter (mm2)

Also
10,000 square meters = 1 hectare (ha)
100 hectares = 1 square kilometer

CONVERTING UNITS OF AREA

Units of area can be changed from one unit to another, using the
metric converter for length. The decimal point is moved twice the
number of spaces (left or right) between units.
Consider the chart below to help you convert from one metric unit
of area to another.
X
km hm dkm m dm cm Mm
÷
 To use the device, determine what direction the
conversion or change will take whether to the right or
to the left.
 Count how many steps it will take to get from the initial
unit to the unit of measure required.
 Move the decimal point TWICE the number of spaces
between units.
Examples:
1) Convert 8.5m2 = __________cm2
Solution:
 From m to cm is 2 steps to the right
 Move the decimal point 2 x 2 or 4 places to the
right.
Therefore:

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

2) Convert 30 000cm2 = __________m2
Solution:
 From cm to m is 2 steps to the left
 Move the decimal point 2 x 2 = 4 places to the left.
Thus:

3) How many m2 are in 12km?

Solution:
 From km to m is 3 steps to the right.
 Move the decimal point 3 x 2 = 6 places to the right
Hence,

C. MEASURE OF MASS and WEIGHT

The kilogram (kg) is the basic unit of mass under the MKS
system. The mass of an object is the amount of matter it contains.
Weight is the amount of pull or force of gravity on the mass of an object.
Metric Ton is used only when large measurements are involved. The
prefixes is the units for measuring weight are the same as the units for
measuring length.

METRIC MEASURES OF MASS/ WEIGHT

1 centigram (cg) = 10 milligrams (mg)
1 decigram (dg) = 10 centigram (cg)
1 gram (g) = 10 decigram (dg)
1 dekagram (dkg) = 10 gram (g)
1 hectogram (hg) = 10 dekagram (dkg)
1 kilogram (kg) = 10 hectogram (hg)
Other derived equivalent units
1,000 mg = 1 gram
1,000 g = 1kg
1,000 kg = 1 metric ton (t)

Consider the metric converter below to help you convert one unit of
weight to another
X
kg hg dkg g dg cg mg
÷
 To convert a small unit to a large unit, DIVIDE by the
appropriate power of 10 or simply MOVE the decimal
point as many places to the LEFT as the power indicates.
7

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

 To convert a large unit to a small unit. MULTIPLY by the
appropriate power of 10 or simply MOVE the decimal
point as many places to the RIGHT as the power
indicates.
Examples:
1) Convert 7.8kg = _________ dkg
Solution:
 From kg to dkg we are changing big unit to a small
unit
 Move the decimal point 2 places to the RIGHT.

2) Convert 5940cg = _________ g

Solution:
 From cg to g, we are changing smaller unit to a
bigger unit.
 Move the decimal point 2 places to the LEFT

3) Convert 8.5kg = ________ g

Solution:
 From kg to g is 3 steps to the right, hence multiply
by 103 or 1000
8.5kg = (8.5 x 1000) g = 8500g
4) Convert 3460mg = ________ dg
 From mg to dg is 2 steps to the left, divide 102 or
100
3460 mg = (3460 ÷ 100) dg = 34.6dg

D. MEASURES OF VOLUME and CAPACITY

CAPACITY is the ability of an object to receive or contain
substance in the space it occupies. It is basically the same as volume.
Capacity is usually applied to liquid while volume is usually applied
to solid.
LITER (L) is a unit of measuring liquid volume in the metric
system.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

X
kL hL dkL L dL cL mL
Kiloliter hectoliter dekaliter liter deciliter centiliter milliliter
÷
 Units of volume can also be changed from one unit to
another using the metric converter. This time the decimal
point is moved TWICE the number of steps between units
since volume involves three dimensions.
Examples:
1. Convert 96.58cm3 to m3
Solution:
 Count 2 steps to the left (from cm to m)
 Move the decimal point 2 x 3 = 6 places to the
LEFT.
0.0000965m2

2. Convert 8.6L to mL
Solution:
 We use 1mL = 0.01L or 1L = 1000mL
8.6 L x 1mL = 8.6 mL = 8600mL
.001L .001

3. Convert 358mL to L
Solution
 From mL to L is 3 steps to the left.
 Divide by 103 or 1000
358mL = (358 ÷ 1000) L = 0.358L
4. Convert 0.493 to mL
Solution:
 From L to mL is 3 steps to the right.
 Multiply 103 or 1000
0.493L = (0.493 x 1000) mL = 493mL

Examples:
1. Change 20°C to °F 2. Change 68°F to °C
Solution: Solution:
°F = + 32 °C = 5 x (°F – 32°)
9
= 180 + 32 = 5 x (68° - 32°)
5 9
= 36° + 32° = 5 x 36°
°F= 68 9
= 180°
9
°C= 20

F. MEASURE OF TIME
Time is a definite period of season or duration. It is one of the
fundamental quantities of the physical world. It is like length, capacity
and weight that are intangible. Your achievement depends on how
wisely you use it. Once you fail to use time wisely, it is gone forever.

Second is the base unit of time.

Measures of Time Equivalent

What is It
Learning how to solve real – word problems using metric conversions is
as important as learning how to do the conversion themselves.
Mathematicians, Scientists, Nurses and even athletes are often confronted with
situations when they are presented with information using metric
measurement, and must then make decisions based on that data.
To solve these problems effectively, you need to understand the context
of a problem, perform conversions, and then check the reasonableness of your
answer. Do all three of these steps and you will succeed in whatever
measurement system you find yourself using.

16

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

 UNDERSTANDING CONTEXT AND PERFORMING CONVERSIONS:

The first step in solving any real world problem is to understand

its context. This will help you figure out what kinds of solutions are
reasonable (and the problem itself may give you clues about what types
of conversions are necessary).
EXAMPLE:
1. In the Division Palaro 2019 at Marikina Sports Center, athletes
compete in race of the following lengths: 100 m, 200 m, 400 m,
800 m, 1500 m, 5000 m and 10 000 m. If a runner will run in all
these races, how many kilometres would he run?

Solutions:
10 000 To figure out how many kilometres he
would
5 000 run, you need to first add all of the lengths
1 500 of the races together and then convert that
800 measurement to kilometers.
400
200
+ 100____
18 000

18 000 m · 1 km_ = _______km Use the factor label method

1 1 000 m and unit fraction to convert
from meters to kilometers.

18 000 m · __1 km__= _______km Cancel m, and solve.

1 1 000 m
18 000 · 1 km__= _______km
1 1 000
18 000 = 18 km
1 000

The runner would run 18 km.

2. One bottle holds 295 dL while another holds 28,000 mL. What is
the difference in capacity between the two bottles?

Solutions:
295 dL = _____ L The two measurement are in

17

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

28 000 mL = _____ L different units. You can
convert both units to Liters and
then compare them.
a) 295 dL · 1 L = _____L Convert dL to L
1 10dL
295 dL · 1 L = _____L Cancel similar units and
1 10 dL multiply
295 · 1 L = _295 L
1 10 10
295 L_ = 29.5 L 295 dL = 29.5 L
10

b) 28,000 mL · __1 L____ = ____L Convert mL to L

1 1000 mL
28,000 mL · __1L____ = ____L
1 1000 mL
28,000 · __1 L___ = ____L
1 1000
28,000 = ____L
1000
28,000 = 28 L 28,000 mL = 28 L
1000

29.5 L – 28 L= 1.5 L

There is difference in capacity of 1.5 L between the two bottles.

 CHEKING YOUR CONVERSIONS:

Sometimes it is a good idea to check your conversions using
second method. This usually helps you catch any errors that you may
make such as using wrong unit fractions or moving the decimal point
the wrong way.

EXAMPLE:
1) A two liter bottle contains 87 centiliters of oil and 4.1 deciliters of
water. How much more liquid is needed to fill the bottle?

Solutions:
87 cL + 4.1 dL + ____ = 2 L You are looking for the amount
of liquid needed to fill the bottle.
Convert both measurement to L
and then solve the problem.

b) 4.1 dL = ____L Convert 4.1 dL to L

4.1 dL . _1 L_ = ____L
1 10 dL
4.1 dL . _1 L_ = ____L
1 10 dL
4.1 . _1 L_ = ____L
1 10
4.1 L_ = 0.41 L
10

87 cL + 4.1 dL + ____ = 2 L Subtract to find how much more

liquid is needed to fill the bottle
0.87 L + 0.41 L + ____ = 2 L
2 L – 0.87 L – 0.41 L = 0.72 L

The amount of liquid needed to fill the bottle is 0.72 L.

Having come up with the answer, you could also check your conversions
using the quicker “move the decimal” method, shown below.

a) 87 cL + 4.1 dL + ____ 2You are looking for the amount

of liquid needed to fill the bottle.

87 cL = ____ L Convert 87 cL to L

places to the left in 4.1L

87 cL + 4.1 dL + ___ = 2 L
0.87 L + 0.41 L + ___ = 2 L
