Part of speech is the grammatical class of the words and shows its function/job in a
sentence. There are nine parts of speech in English:

1. Noun: the name ofa thing, person, place


e.g. cat, Sandy, doctor, pen, student, class, Paris
This is my house.
My garden is big.

2. Verb: expresses an action or a state


e.g. go, do, help, drink, eat, be (am/is/are ), have, ete.

3. Adjective: describes a noun

6. Preposition: links a noun and another word


e.g. at, after, with, about, to, from, on, in, ete.
We don't go to school on Sunday.
After lunch, we watch TV.
We are in the classroom.
She is from ltaly.

7. Conjunction: joins clauses or sentences or words and shows relationship


between them
e.g. and, but, or, when, because, so, ete.

When she is happy, she cries.
These shoes are nice but very expensive.
They don't need acar because they live in a small town.

8. Determiner: limits or determines a noun


e.g. alan, the, some, many, one, two, those, ete.

Many people are afraid of dentists.

9. lnterjection: expresses emotion or reaction, (and an exclamation mark (1)


usually follows it
e.g. Wow, Hi, Oops, Oh, Aww, Ouch, Hey, ete.

Oh no, it is raining again.
Ouch! it hurts, please stop.
Aww! Look at the little puppy.

Basic Sentence Structure in Engt~~h


Sentences usually have a simple structure in English: subject, verb and then object.

Subject + Verb + Object

Subject is the person, place or thing the sentence is about. AII verbs have a subject

an'd it is usually the thing or person who does the action. it can be a noun or__
phrase (a group of two or more words) or pronoun. ·

• in imperative sentences, to give instructions or express a request or demand,·-
subject is not stated, but we understand it.

CHAPTER 1

Object is the person or thing affected by the verb and it comes after the verb. Some
verbs have an object and it can be a noun, noun phrase or pronoun.
e.g. Sam drinks coffee. (noun)

Negative sentences in English


To make negative sentences in English we add "not" after the verb to be or
verbs (do, does, ete.).
e.g. Sam is not a student. (Subject + to be + not + rest of the sentence)
Sam does not (doesn't) drink coffee. (Subject + do/does + not+ verb + rest Of
the sentence)

Questions in English
in English there are two basic types of questions; Yes/No questions and Wh-questions.
1. Yes/No questions have only two answers yes or no.
• word order far questions with verb to be: (To be+ subject + rest of the sentence)
e.g. Q: Is Sam a student?
A: Yes, he is. / No, he isn't.
Q: Are you hungry?
A: Yes, 1am. / No, l'm not.

• word order far questions with simple present tense: (Do/Does + subject + verb +
rest of the sentence) -·.:, '; '-'
e.g. Q: Does Sam drink coffee?
A: Yes, he does. / No, he doesn't.
Q: Do you like faotball?
A: Yes, 1 do. / No, 1 don't

2. Wh-questions start with a word like what, which, who, where, when, why, how and
whose. These are called question words. They ask far information.
