Perfect Square or Square Number

Some of the properties of Perfect Square or Square Number:

(i) Perfect square end with either 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9.
(ii) The square of an even number is divisible by 4.
(iii) The square of an odd number is a multiple of 8, plus 1.
E.g. 3! = 9 = 8 + 1,
5! = 25 = 3 × 8 + 1,
7! = 49 = 6 × 8 + 1

Recap:

i) Given 𝑎! − 𝑏 ! , or a difference of 2 squares, we can write

𝑎! − 𝑏 ! = (𝑎 − 𝑏)(𝑎 + 𝑏)
= (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏)
Examples:

100! − 99! = (100 − 99)(100 + 99)

= 199
! !
55 − 45 = (55 − 45)(55 + 45)
= 1000
Evaluate the following:

a) 96! − 95! =

b) 81! − 9! =

c) 99! − 1! =

d) 25! − 24! =

ii) (𝑎 + 𝑏)! , or quadratic equation, can be expressed as (𝑎 + 𝑏)! = 𝑎! + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 ! .

Examples,
a) 81 + 18𝑥 + 𝑥 ! = 9! + (2)(9)(𝑥) + 𝑥 !
= (9 + 𝑥)!

b) 9801 + 198 + 1 = 99! + 2(99)(1) + 1!

= (99 + 1)!
= 10000

c) 8100 + 1800 + 100 = 90! + 2(90)(10) + 10!

= (90 + 10)!
= 10000

d) 3600 + 480 + 4 = (60)! + 2(60)(2) + 2!

= 62!
= 3844

Complete the following:

a) 3600 + 4800 + 1600

b) 4900 + 4200 + 900

c) 729 + 1242 + 529

d) 1089 + 1122 + 289
